Description The Phantom of the Opera (also known as Erik) -- perhaps my favourite character of all time, but I think Elphaba just beats him.

Anyway, I based this illustration on the Phantom’s description in the original novel, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Unlike the handsome actors who have played Erik in the many Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, the original Phantom looked like a corpse from head to foot, not just on half of his face. It is also said that he was abnormally tall, had very long fingers, eyes that glow red in the dark and no nose.

Another thing, the notes you can see on Erik’s cummerbund form part of the Dies Irae, a piece of music for which he has great respect (in the book, this hymn appears on the walls of his lair). Erik’s own magnum opus, Don Juan Triumphant, is lying at his feet.

I know this portrayal is a bit cartoony. I have a friend who’s a great fan of Erik and didn’t like this painting all that much. I started a more realistic version, but stopped after a while. I like cartoony better.

(Aren't the eyes in the book supposed to be golden?) Anyway, your Erik looks... kinda cute and Poe-esque *0* I love him even more than I did before. Insta-fav!

Ok, I love this picture, even though I've never read the book . . . But seriously, the first thing I thought when I read the description was, "So the Phantom is Voldemort?"

I love this so much! My only issue is I remember the book saying his eyes were yellow, not red. It's probably just one of those things that happens while translating things. Sorry if i'm being picky. But this lovely piece gets a ten out of ten!

sweet!! that is indeed how i would think he was meant to look like!! that story spawned from bones being found in a cellar of an opera house in France!!! the bones were probably just a homeless person looking for warmth, but Gaston Leroux ran with it lol

Amazing interpretation of the phantom. They should have him look more like he is in the book if they make another movie

The reason they couldn't, and also in the musical is that with that much makeup it is difficult to sing, and plus you have to have a full face mask, which with both makes it almost impossible to sing. Especially something so operatic. Just a fun fact lol

Your friend was repulsed (and rightly so), but I think that you totally justified his character in this portrayal. Though the style is toony, it would have given a more realistic dilemma for the characters of POTO to deal with.

The faded colors on his cape/cloak/ thing are also beautiful and make me smile

Wow; this is fantastic! Looks like Erik if they ever did (another) Phantom cartoon. Very nicely done - I love his hair and his long, skinny limbs.
It actually reminds me a little of Tutenstein, in a weird way.
Again, very nice!

Simply beautiful, his hair, his cane, his long fingers, his tattered cape, amaazing! Thogh didn't he have yellow eyes in the Leroux novel?

I love the implanted musical references in his clothes and the awesome pimp cane. The eyes are gripping, just as described. Although it is a bit cartoony, I enjoy the fact that you made him your own vision. A really interesting image, to boot! (Your coloring blows my socks off, btw)

I have to agree with you, Eric is probably one of my favorite characters in literary, ever! XD I love him! His story is relatable... I'm gonna read that book again! XD

Somehow... I find him somewhat similar to Lucy from the anime Elfen Lied, they both kill people without much intention, yet they have a reason for killing, both had horrible pasts, both are somewhat antagonists and protagonists at the same time, they both have lovers that are somewhat hard to reach because they love both them and someone else (Christine for Eric and Kohta for Lucy), and they both are somewhat artists (Lucy singing, and Eric... singing wow another similarity).

Pst! *conspiratorial whisper* His eyes glow yellow, not red.

But still! This is a delightful rendition of Erik. It's refreshing to find a picture of him on deviantart that's not based off pretty boy Gerrard.

Weatherduck In reply to Dracawyn [2009-09-09 01:57:14 +0000 UTC]

Somebody already told me about the eyes. The second-rate translation I read didn't actually give a colour. It just said they glowed like fire. Thanks.

This is fantastic work. I've never read the novel and didn't know he was described so differently, but it's really interesting to see a Phantom who's genuinely disfigured rather than slightly inconvenienced.

He seems to have made the same transition in switching to the stage as dracula did to switching to the screen Dracula started off as a wrinkly, aged man with hairy palms if I memory serves, certainly not the seductive man-beast we all know and presumably love.

But I digress. The point was and is: great work! I really like your style.
