Description
The Phantom of the Opera (also known as Erik) -- perhaps my favourite character of all time, but I think Elphaba just beats him.Anyway, I based this illustration on the Phantom’s description in the original novel, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Unlike the handsome actors who have played Erik in the many Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, the original Phantom looked like a corpse from head to foot, not just on half of his face. It is also said that he was abnormally tall, had very long fingers, eyes that glow red in the dark and no nose.
Another thing, the notes you can see on Erik’s cummerbund form part of the Dies Irae, a piece of music for which he has great respect (in the book, this hymn appears on the walls of his lair). Erik’s own magnum opus, Don Juan Triumphant, is lying at his feet.
I know this portrayal is a bit cartoony. I have a friend who’s a great fan of Erik and didn’t like this painting all that much. I started a more realistic version, but stopped after a while. I like cartoony better.

Sure. Although I'm not sure how illustrating will work coz I live in the deep south of Australia!
But anyhow, my email: the_enamoured_imp@hotmail.com
Actually, it would be better just to contact me on this website coz I haven't used my email address in about a year (if you do decide to contact me, that is)...

LOL. That's okay. My current plan is to have my brother illustrate and he's 2000 miles from me. That's not as far as Australia, but it might as well be for as often as we get to visit. That having been said, everything in my life moves VERY slowly, so it could be a while anyway. THANKS!!!

Well, you have to use a bit of imagination anyway to draw a character with a description of a corpse. xD I think this is very well done; I didn't know about this until I saw your picture. I think the movie would have been more interesting if they stayed true to this description.

Bravo for having a unique vision of the Phantom! I love how dark and gothic he is, (I hate using that word but I don't know how else to describe it), and how his shoulders are all bony. XD Niiiice designs on the cane, too!

I like this! Don't worry about if it's cartoony, it's great anyway! It's so nice for someone to remember Erik wasn't handsome or very ncie in the original, but grotesque and WAY screwed up in the head! I love what you did with him here!

This piece is so mesmerizing that I favorited just because it made me so uncomfortable and I've maybe looked at it five times today. It fills one with such discomfort but pervades such attitude. It's exactly how Erik should look, to a T. The 2004 Phantom just filled you with pity and made Christine look very shallow; this drawing shows that Christine was dead on by being terrified.
Amazing.

I absolutely love this rendition of Erik. From the body language and the face, something about the whole thing clicks for me. If someone ever thinks about remaking the Phantom of the Opera cartoon, This would be the perfect candidate for Erik's official design.

Kyah! Wow. It's really rare to see the good old original Erik here on DA.
Awesome to the max. I absolutely love the little touches; the music notes on his shirt, the skull cane, the little tatters in his cloak. Just wonderful!
I'm in love with how you did his face. It's rather different from what I usually see of Leroux Erik--very cool.
Yeah, I tend to like cartoony better, too
This is just great, it really brightened my day!

You're quite right. I realised after I'd finished that I'd made that mistake. I think it was because the only translation I'd read at the time didn't specify what colour they were... just said they were "blazing".
But thankyou for liking it despite the flaw

F-warp In reply to Weatherduck [2008-02-11 16:39:39 +0000 UTC]
Dude, that is not a flaw. It's just different.
The slight sunburn of a deformity in the 2004 piece of crap, THAT is a flaw.

Yeah, a lot of people hated that, for obvious reasons. The Phantom was much better looking than Raoul despite the sunburn!

Weatherduck In reply to myoneandonly [2008-02-08 06:48:18 +0000 UTC]
Thankyou . Yes, as much as I like Gerard Butler's Phantom, there is no denying he is absolutely nothing like the original Erik, not only in appearance (Butler has a nose!) but also in voice. Erik is meant to sound celestial, like a bell, an angel, a ghost... I think Michael Crawford had a much more fitting voice for the part, but Butler's masculine presence is pretty much unbeatable
.

myoneandonly In reply to Weatherduck [2008-02-11 02:16:30 +0000 UTC]
I completely agree!!! I think I ranted about this on phantomoftheopera.com long, long ago. About how, if you combined Michael Crawford's angelic vibrato and lung capacity with Gerard's deep, growly-ness, you would get about as close to Erik's voice as humanly possible. (Even now, Michael Crawford is singing "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" on my iPod, which is on shuffle. XD )

I don't think cartoony is ever a problem. You have some interesting shapes and angles on him, I like the hair.
I tried reading the book but I couldn't finish it. The characters and the writing got to me, but if the book was originally written in French than it might have been victimized by a poor translation.

Weatherduck In reply to JesterSeven [2008-02-07 06:03:33 +0000 UTC]
I think you're right, the book was probably a lot more dramatic and gripping in its original language. I found the English version had very, very, very long sentences, and the whole Christine/Raoul 'romance' didn't really feel like a romance at all! I kept skipping to the bits with Erik; they made me cry.

JesterSeven In reply to Weatherduck [2008-02-07 07:34:26 +0000 UTC]
There's probably more than one version. The one I read sounded like it was narrated poorly, and Raoul kept flopping about so much with his feelings for Christine, ("I love her, she's an angel and I must save her!" " she's a witch!") sometimes mid-paragraph, and it drove me nuts.

Weatherduck In reply to JesterSeven [2008-02-07 12:23:15 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... sounds like your version was even crazier than mine! Fortunately, the Andrew Lloyd Webber version transcends language barriers, thanks to the music.

But then again, think of the time period when it was written. What may be strange to us now, was perfectly normal back then, whether it was translated or not. Prime example; Shakespeare...
