Description Unlike its predecessor, this garter snake was pretty feisty and took several lunges at me. It remained coiled and ready to strike until I moved on and left it alone.

Kennebunk, Maine.

It's eyes look slightly blue. It could be from the camera or it could be a pre-shed sign and all snakes are extra feisty when nearing shed. He's got a pretty orange color. Do you know what subspecies he is or from what geographic area you found him in?

It's an eastern garter. I dunno if there are sub-variations, but even within one range they can have somewhat variable markings. You're spot on about the orange tint to this guy, compare it to this more olive-earthy brown garter from only a short ways away in New Hampshire: [link]

The Eastern Garters in my area are very gray with a white or tan/brown stripe. They're so bland even compared to the olive-earthy brown one you photographed. I want a garter snake eventually. I was thinking either a female albino checkered, who'd be named Siren, or a San Fransisco garter snake, but the oranges one this guy makes me want to find this type of color morph.
