Description A Mergus merganser drake surfaces with his catch, a young bass. Based on photos I took at one of my favorite birding spots earlier this month.  And yes, they can eat fish this of this size--their mouths and throats stretch to accommodate their prey. Also keep in mind that the fish is flaring out its jaws as it struggles in the clutch of the sawbill, so the head appears larger than usual.

Pretty sweet. Do they have teeth? Or do birds have some kind of proto-teeth? I assumed they were toothless but had jagged beaks. I don't study birds. ^_^

Thanks! They have teeth-like serrations which are a part of the bill.
