All my wibblings about not wanting to overwhelm Ursa's genuine strength of character with gratuitous badassery aside-I so love the idea of her having a commission as an officer in the Fire Navy and hunting pirates, possibly alongside Ozai at times. And where else is Zuzu gonna pick up those rebel-peasant-weapons if not Mama? Her family is in disgrace, and I don't see her as a 'bender- she'd totally pick up the strength and skills of a weapon-handler to make her way in the world.

I can imagine it now, Prince Ozai meets her on the battlefield somewhere and quickly falls for her. They kick a ton of ass before getting married and even some afterwards. But then that brat Zuko is born and Ursa realizes she'd rather be a mother than a fighter. Ozai resents this and takes it out on Zuko. It isn't until Azula is born that he realizes she is just like her mother was all those years ago, thus he favors her over Zuko. Ursa didn't want her daughter to turn out like she was and that leads to Azula's feeling of her mother thinking she was a monster. Eventually she learns that Ozai is going to kill Zuko so she whips out her badassness once again to kill her father-in-law. Ozai has to banish her for her 'treason' but knows she'll do just fine out on her own... maybe not, but hey, good pic.

Personally, I think there was definitely some level of arrangement in the marriage, but in order to have had any standing and to have held Ozai's interest, Ursa had to have been something of a badass. Maybe they met in battle or in martial circles, and they weren't unknown to each other by the time Azulon handed down the decision of who his younger son was going to marry.
Zuko, poor kid, I think is mostly stuck with the whole problem of 'he's taking her away from me' *and* Ozai being terribly afraid of the fragile and the useless. It doesn't matter that Zuko's a kid- he's just not something Ozai can depend on to excel, and thus not worth his time unless it's to force him to shape up.
Ozai's an asshole, but a lot of his more outrageous stuff seems to stem from his caring strongly in a really warped fashion.

That seems equally as plausible as my suggestion, if not more so.
This is what I love about the fandom. There are so many great characters introduced but we only get to see a small part of their lives, some admittly less than others, then we go and fill in the blanks. For example, I read a story on FFN that focused on Gansu (Lee's father) after the events of Zuko Alone and his search for his elder son Sensu. I thought it was very good, not to mention original, I can't say I've read any other Gansu centric fanfics. Then there's the [shameless self promotion] project I've been writing, it's an autobiography written by Roku's daughter/Ursa's mother, chronicling the 'lost' 100 years from her father's death on. (Admittly it won't cover the entire 100 years, but it will cover most of it.)

I love the idea! It'd be so cool to have Ursa kind of be Ozai's 'secret weapon' on missions and stuff. I may have to use this idea in a fanfic, if you don't mind. ^-^ Anyways, great pic. I love the armor.

I agree, she's a strong woman, she'd have to be to survive in the Fire Nation imperial family. I would say she has many secrets herself.
