Description
Oh my gosh, I finally finished it! It only took, like, a month and a half! I know that's slow, even for me, and I really wasn't expecting it to take nearly that long, but then I realized that I've never drawn Mai before, never drawn Zuko in armor before, never drawn him bald or head on before, and that in order to make sense it needed some form of background, which I almost never do, so I had issues with perspective and whatnot (and eventually wound up deleting/ erasing much of the background). Oy. But it's finished! Yeay!So anyway, this is "Fire Nation Gothic," my first ever Maiko pic, which I did as a gift for , although I cannot remember what the occasion was (especially since I don't really ship Maiko, but oh well). Once again, it was sketched by hand and colored in photoshop (with about 50 layers). If you can't tell it's done as a semi-parody of American Gothic (though if you can't tell that from either the title, the pose, or both, then I have failed miserably and I must go curl up in a ball and weep
I tried to keep it as close as I could to the actual painting, although I couldn't do a farmhouse, since they would never live in a farm house, so instead it's the entrance of a random Fire Nation building (which I decided is very large and rather far away, which is why you can't see any door, which is one of the things I had to erase because it was screwing with the perspective too much). And Zuko has a sword because it was the only think I could think of to have him holding that was even remotely similar to a pitchfork and that he would actually have (a spear would have been better, but Zuzu doesn't use spears, so that wasn't really an option).
So anyway, to finish with my babbling and shut up, I hope that I did a good enough job with it and that you guys like it (especially , for whom I made it) and that it's shippy enough for the Maiko shippers, even though it's not a mushy kind of ship.
Edit: Also, I have just now realized that I forgot to to the shading on Zuko's hand, so now it looks weirdly flat, but oh well, I don't really feel like going back and fixing it right now.

This is indeed a very interesting piece. But unfortunately your idea is incorrect. Not many people who do not study art don't know that in the original painting the man is the owner of the farm and the woman is his daughter. They are not a couple. Also, the reason it is called American Gothic is because of that window on the farm house. It is an old classic gothic window frame.
I have to say, though, the concept, pose and perspective are indeed well done. But calling it Fire Nation Gothic would be inaccurate.
I seriously don't mean to burst anyone's bubbles. Just trying to offer some helpful criticism.

Actually I did know that the woman in painting is the man's daughter, and that it's a gothic window. It's called Fire Nation Gothic because I often find Maiko to be a bit gothic in the other, modern/social meaning of the word (especially Mai), and because it's based on American Gothic. It's kind of a play on words. And I chose American Gothic because of how the people in the painting look not because of who they actually are. They look very bland and serious, (and, most importantly, they look like a couple, even though they aren't) and that matched my pre-season-three idea of Maiko (and I did the pic way before the season started). And I also chose American Gothic, in part, because they're not a couple and I actually don't like the Maiko ship but I had promised a friend a Maiko pic, so I drew them like that, kind of as my own sneaky attack on the ship.
And I couldn't possibly have done a gothic window anyway, because Fire Nation buildings wouldn't have them, so it would have looked stupid, hence the banner.
It's not supposed to be a literal, direct repainting of the original, though I suppose I ought to have said that in the artist's comments, but I figured that most people wouldn't know or care that the people in the original aren't a couple, and my comments were already pretty long, and it would have taken a lot of explaining (as has just been demonstrated), so I didn't bother. Also, I didn't want my friend to know about my sneaky dissing of his ship. Clearly, I should have explained it all after all.

VERY CLEVER!
It's awesome, I got 'it' from the title and the pose!
I think you're right about American Gothic fitting their ship.
This is just great on so many levels.
The Maiko piece I did was them sitting under a tree and Zuko is smiling
... If I were to draw it now, I couldn't draw it the same. It's too ooc.
And then there is another one I did where they are glancing at each other behind Azula's back
...again...not Maiko.
I think once we know more about them I'll try to do another drawing that captures their essence
... as well as you did here.

This is very fitting.
This drawing makes me think of what painting could represent Zutara. My mind keeps taking me to mythology, like venus and mars, eros and psyche, etc. ... you know scantilly clad with cupid around ...etc. I'm not sure though ... but I keep thinking about it.
What do you think?

Those are good, particularly Venus and Mars. Neoclassical seems to work very well for Zutara (mainly because it's romantic and skimpy). I particularly like "Venus and Mars, an Allegory of Peace" by Lagrenee, and Guillemot's "Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan" (though Aang would have to be Vulcan, and that would just be a bit mean).

Drisela In reply to Tempest-in-Blue [2007-09-27 00:58:47 +0000 UTC]
Yes! Those are great!
I say leave Vulcan out of the equation. In my dream world where Zutara happens, Aang has let Katara go. He has matured and accepted that it is not wise for the avatar to love one person above all others.
They will always love each other but they are not lovers.
Mars and Venus works for Zuko and Katara on many levels. Mars is the god of war, Zuko hasn't really fought in the war ... more like personal projects. But Fire Nation armor, robes and cloaks could easily translate to Roman armor and togas ... and RED! C'mon.
Venus, born of WATER, goddess of love, exactly what Zuko needs! And when she is actually wearing clothes it's sometimes depicted in blue. There's also the forbidden factor. They have to hide their love behind curtains in dark places ... like a catacomb for example.
Look:

I was going to do a halloween drawing of them as Artemis and Apollo (I know they are brother and sister, but they are also the sun and moon ... it was going to be funny when I figured out what the would say ...) But now I think Mars and Venus is much more Zutaran. ...
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

That it's time to get sketching? Absolutely!
And as for Artemis and Apollo, well, incest never stopped the greek gods before (ie., Zeus married his sister, slept with his other sister, and his aunt, and his cousin, and his first cousin twice removed, and, well, check here [link] ). lol. Disgusting? Yes, absolutely, no question about it, but very ancient-greek-god-esque all the same. And I think Mars and Venus (and Vulcan) are half siblings anyway, so there you go. lol

YEAH!
Oh, Mythology, sick, sick Mythology, I love it!
I guess Artemis and Apollo is fitting but I think Mars and Venus suits Zutara better.
After looking at a few sources I think "Venus and Mars, an Allegory of Peace" by Lagrenee is the one I will draw on the most. It focuses on the 'eace' aspect, No vulcan discovering them, armor discarded on the floor ... Love conquers hate(war) and there is peace. sweet.

I think she makes a good Venus too, since, like, every guy she meets gets a crush on her. lol. And yeah, I think the Lagrenee is my favorite too. Though I'm gonna keep looking around a bit more, just in case, and I still have another pic to finish anyway. I have to admit though, as mean as it is, a little, evil, kataang-hating part of me want's Vulcan there, even though I know that it wouldn't be good for "peace." I shall have to resist that part of me, I suppose.
Ah well, should be a lot of fun.

Oh I'm going to keep looking around too ... I also have a few things to finish but I think I'll work on this for Halloween.
hmmm. 'Vulcan' discovering them still fits them somewhat. Although Aang and Katara are not married they still share a bond. One that would be strained if he were to discover her love for Zuko. Maybe you should listen to the little evil part of you.
I think if Aang sees that Katara is attracted to Zuko and that he's likes her too and that they could make each other happy, he would move on with his life. Just like when he had to tell Meng he didn't like her that way ... he'll have to understand.
I don't know.
....I can't wait to see your drawing.

Well, I'm trying, but I'm not quite there yet. I like Maiko alright, it's just not my favorite.
And I'm glad you think I picked a good quote. It took forever to settle on one, since I love so many Lewis quotes, but this one's one of my favorites (I'm one of those people who can scarcely be in the same room as a book by or about Lewis without picking it up and reading it. hahaha). This particular quote is from Mere Christianity. The full paragraph it's from reads: “No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness — they have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means — the only complete realist.”
I like your quote too though. I love the Breastplate of St. Patrick. I wish dA would allow for longer quotes in the sigs...

Do you know about the Comedy Benders club? Your Fire Nation Gothic would be something they'd like! They accepted my Tokka Gothic!
And since you also use emoticons.... maybe you'd consider joining my club as well? It's a party club where we set up emoticon parties for nice individuals that we think deserve a little shindig in their honor. But nothing gross or bad
It all started over a party that I and a fellow DA-er threw for a most deserving artist .
