Description Oh my gosh, I finally finished it! It only took, like, a month and a half! I know that's slow, even for me, and I really wasn't expecting it to take nearly that long, but then I realized that I've never drawn Mai before, never drawn Zuko in armor before, never drawn him bald or head on before, and that in order to make sense it needed some form of background, which I almost never do, so I had issues with perspective and whatnot (and eventually wound up deleting/ erasing much of the background). Oy. But it's finished! Yeay!

So anyway, this is "Fire Nation Gothic," my first ever Maiko pic, which I did as a gift for , although I cannot remember what the occasion was (especially since I don't really ship Maiko, but oh well). Once again, it was sketched by hand and colored in photoshop (with about 50 layers). If you can't tell it's done as a semi-parody of American Gothic (though if you can't tell that from either the title, the pose, or both, then I have failed miserably and I must go curl up in a ball and weep ), and I did it that way because when I was trying to decide what kind of pose to do for a Maiko pic, I couldn't think of any really shippy kinds of poses that really seemed....*them.* To me, even as a ship they just don't seem all that romantic. I mean, they may love each other, but there's a difference between love an romance and they just don't seem very romantic to me (and there's nothing wrong with that. Some couples are just more reserved than others and that's fine). So I was thinking about the characters, and about the ship, and all of a sudden "American Gothic" came to me and it seemed perfect, so I decided to use it for Maiko even though it required a background, since the painting has a farmhouse in the background.

I tried to keep it as close as I could to the actual painting, although I couldn't do a farmhouse, since they would never live in a farm house, so instead it's the entrance of a random Fire Nation building (which I decided is very large and rather far away, which is why you can't see any door, which is one of the things I had to erase because it was screwing with the perspective too much). And Zuko has a sword because it was the only think I could think of to have him holding that was even remotely similar to a pitchfork and that he would actually have (a spear would have been better, but Zuzu doesn't use spears, so that wasn't really an option).

So anyway, to finish with my babbling and shut up, I hope that I did a good enough job with it and that you guys like it (especially , for whom I made it) and that it's shippy enough for the Maiko shippers, even though it's not a mushy kind of ship.

Edit: Also, I have just now realized that I forgot to to the shading on Zuko's hand, so now it looks weirdly flat, but oh well, I don't really feel like going back and fixing it right now.

I didn't even know that the original painting was called "American Gothic", but that didn't keep me from recognizing this. The poses and facial expressions are instantly recognizable.

The pose suits Mai, and her character seems to fit it. She is shown to be graceful and elegant, with an overpowering stillness surrounding her on every side. This is how she will look standing next to her future husband.

Zuko, however, has lost some of the (for lack of a better term) FIRE that is so characteristic of his personality. He still looks like Zuko, but something about his eyes indicates that the flame has gone out inside. This is to be expected. If he were ever to wind up with Mai, he would need to lose that FIRE or risk engaging her in mortal combat every single day. This piece accurately reflects the very reason why I don't ship Maiko. Zuko would have to stop being Zuko in order for it to work.

Don't worry about Zuko's hand. It looks good. Aside from being a little emotionally henpecked, he looks like he stepped right out of the cartoon. I wanted to make sure I mentioned this, since you've expressed displeasure at your efforts to draw Zuko in the past.

The symmetry, proportionality and shading of the background are all very good. Although I know that the background gave you some grief this time, I'm sure that you will improve your skills quickly. That's what has always happened in the past.

Thak you. I know Zuko doesn't look as emotive as is characteristic for him. That's actually due to a combination of things, the first bein the Mai affect as you described, the second being that I was having trouble with his facial shading, and the third being that I was copying American Gothic and the guy in that painting looks really...bored and blank. But it's so weird to draw him like that, because Zuko needs expression in order to look like himself. Even when he *is* bored, he even does that expression almost to extreme, so drawing him blank just looks really weird. I know it's not my best work, but I like it, and I'm really glad that you do to.

I hadn't thought of that aspect. If you want to imitate "American Gothic", you have to essentially make them both look like zombies. I don't notice that effect with Mai, since she sort of looks like one already (heh, heh).

Wow! This came out awesome! You really did a good job with the expressions, and the colors...it's very pretty. ^^ Also, I got the reference...but that might not count since you were talking to me about it on aim. XP

hahaha. True, but there was no guarantee that you'd rememeber the AIM conversation, so it counts. Plus, you know me pretty darn well, and you're way smart besides, so you'd probably have gotten it anyway.

And thanks.

Well, thanks. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that, if nothing else, the title would clue me in.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSS SSSEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! [flippy-flippy-flips around, which is a bad thing because his legs are completely dead from work]

I saw this in my watchbox and I was like, "OMG, SHE DID IT!!!"

He? [hides]

Anyway, great work, love it, I don't remember the occasion, either, at all, really, I just know that you've been hinting at this and I've been semi-waiting for it (there's something rather disappointing about a Zutarian doing a Maizu pic, it's just...different...very strange....but anyway....), but not really craving it or wanting it to never come...but now it's here, and WHEEEEE, great work!!!

Zuko's face doesn't look bad.

Nice sword.

I didn't get the title completely at first, or the reference, but the description points it out well....heh...Fire Nation Gothic, indeed.

I picture the romance of their relationship being a little more withdrawn and serious....not mushy-mush fluffy-fluff, but something a little more mature. Helping one another when they need it...mainly Mai caring for Zuko...I think she took over when Ursa left....but then, when Zuko left, Mai was left in an emotional recession...leading to the gothic specimen we have today. How the two will interact in the next season remains to be seen. I'm hoping for something along the lines of Katara and Aang's relationship in "Bitter Work" and "The Waterbending Master," as well as "The Serpent's Pass"....I don't really WANT fluff.

Anyway, off-topic rambling done, I really like how Mai turned out. Zuko turned out great, too, even if his chestplate seems a little high....ah, well. Perfection is overrated--this is plenty for me! <3

Thanks for devoting yourself to this! Highly appreciated, thanks for the mention, great work again!

Now, get back to your Zutara stuff, or some other ships! Get to work, person!!!

But make it good stuff, I love quality....

Faving.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it. And yeah, I think a fluffy mushy Maiko would just be scairy. It'd be worse than happy!Zuko...way, WAY worse. And yeah, there are things that are a bit off, but I'm ok with that. The only thing is, now that I'm done with this I don't know what to do next.

Jet x June! <3

Or Meng x Lee! <3 (I have my reasons...you'll find out on Wednesday....)

Or...or....something just plain summery!

Or "There's plenty of Katara to go around!"

Or Toph and Mai walking off with Aang and Zuko, respectively, ultimately ending in Katara gasping back to consciousness from her horrible fevered nightmares....!!!

I have a lot of energy left, it seems.

Or Yuokka!

Or Zhao, or...or...Zuko running from a horde of turtleducks!!!

Or Azula running after a baby turtleduck!!!

Or Jin, Song, and Katara saying, "Good luck with him" to Mai, who looks somewhat confused and awkward....the former three all looking a bit huffy....

Or...or...or....Iroh gulping down tea!

Or something Harry Potter-ish!

Or Pirate-y!

Like Jack Sparrow beating up Spider-Man!

Or the whole Avatar cast looking huffy!!!

Okay, I think my vid's loaded, so...I'll stop now....

hahaha. Interesting ideas, but you ought to know that I could never have Captain Sparrow beating on my beloved Spidey, even if Pirates 3 is the better movie. It'd be like having him beat on Zuko for being a moron in CoD; I just can't.

I have been feeling awfully piratey lately though....We'll see.
