Description
The physicist and the poet were discussing tragedy and beauty in the coffee shop, probably for no real reason except to make themselves feel better. The poet was playing with his pen. The physicist was playing with a laser pointer, drawing circles around the halogen lamps in the ceiling. They had each been silent for a few minutes. The physicist suddenly remarked, “Light is the most tragic form of beauty in nature.”
The poet swallowed the last of his coffee. It had cost him $1.45 of the $1.70 he still possessed. “How so?”
“In atoms, electrons can be in different orbits around the nucleus. They can move up to higher levels. But they will always fail to stay there. They always fall back to a lower level. Every time an individual electron steps back down, the lost energy is given off as light.”
The poet nodded. “I understand.”
He excused himself and went upstairs to where the payphone was located, next to a closet with no door and a urinal inside. He dropped his last 25 cents into the phone and called his ex-girlfriend. All that we said to her was, “You are a star. I am a laser. Love is gravity.”
_____
This very steep and narrow stairway actually exists in Amsterdam. The original image was underexposed, and then in post production, it was inverted, curves were adjusted and blue tones were bumped up. A slight gaussian blur was applied in the blue channel to reduce noise. A blur layer was also done at the bottom of the stairs to diffuse the light. An adjustment layer was done on the railings to increase their brightness and contrast separate from the the walls. (Also in the original photo, paint chips were coming off the walls in several spots, which showed up as glowing spots in the dark parts of the inverted image, so they were edited out to keep the look on the walls smooth.)
(edit: When I refer to curve adjustments, I'm not talking about the stairs, they actually do curve like that in real life...the architecture was not altered here)

Fun little excerpt below the picture. Tragically, it's a highlight only secondary to the actual existence of such a staircase. If you read between the steps, it says "Don't Drink and Walk These Steps Unless You Signed Our Liability Release Statement. Thank You." Great job with lighting! Blended so smoothe...

Nice "architecture", the lighting gives a nice effect to your deviation and I like these colours that fade to black !

It was a little hostel, not too far away from the Van Gogh museum. I unfortunately can't remember it's name at the moment...
Hope you have fun in Amsterdam, it's such a unique place. And thank you for the comment

I am in love with your description.
I am going to remember that story for a long time.

Oh very nice! You know what I appreciate about this? Is your description as to how this was tweaked. Channels are very useful... I've just discovered them myself. I love the composition and the colours, though they're tweaked. It works so well. Gorgeous lighting.

what an absolutely interesting find. i can see how it looks inverted after reading your explanation, but at first glance, everything looks the way it should be.
nice composition, the editing you've done to the photo gives it a feel of being a path that leads to a place that does not belong in this world.
very nice...

I think I would get sick and throw up if I ever saw this stairwell in real life... it seems to be moving and upsidedown and inverted and just impossible... all at once.... I liked your description as well.

You know, it's not so much seeing the stairwell that's a problem as it is actually climbing it
Thanks for the comment

Outstanding work. Really cool to know it was in Amsterdam.. not that hard to tell.. looks like the typical steep dutch stairs in the Netherlands. The blue really does it for me here. Looks like a neon staircase. Really vibrant, touching.. beautiful

Where in Amsterdam is this?

It was actually a small random hotel we stayed in, not too far from the Van Gogh museum.... "typical Dutch architecture" is how our host refered to it

rwirtz In reply to welder [2004-01-17 19:18:56 +0000 UTC]
"typical Dutch architecture" means small, I think
But it looks pretty modern, so it's not typical Amsterdam, because then you would have thick dark carpeting from wall to wall (and even on the tables).

welder In reply to rwirtz [2004-01-18 06:57:05 +0000 UTC]
I'd say it probably only looks modern because of the inversion and the hiding of the paint chipping away I did in post production...and the carpet is dark, hence why it's so bright in the inversion Though I would agree with the 'small' part

I really do like the unusual look of this, makes you stare and - for the first moment - not believe that it really exists. Thought that this is a complete manipulation first. Great location and photo!
