Description The physicist and the poet were discussing tragedy and beauty in the coffee shop, probably for no real reason except to make themselves feel better. The poet was playing with his pen. The physicist was playing with a laser pointer, drawing circles around the halogen lamps in the ceiling.

They had each been silent for a few minutes. The physicist suddenly remarked, “Light is the most tragic form of beauty in nature.”

The poet swallowed the last of his coffee. It had cost him $1.45 of the $1.70 he still possessed. “How so?”

“In atoms, electrons can be in different orbits around the nucleus. They can move up to higher levels. But they will always fail to stay there. They always fall back to a lower level. Every time an individual electron steps back down, the lost energy is given off as light.”

The poet nodded. “I understand.”

He excused himself and went upstairs to where the payphone was located, next to a closet with no door and a urinal inside. He dropped his last 25 cents into the phone and called his ex-girlfriend. All that we said to her was, “You are a star. I am a laser. Love is gravity.”

_____

This very steep and narrow stairway actually exists in Amsterdam. The original image was underexposed, and then in post production, it was inverted, curves were adjusted and blue tones were bumped up. A slight gaussian blur was applied in the blue channel to reduce noise. A blur layer was also done at the bottom of the stairs to diffuse the light. An adjustment layer was done on the railings to increase their brightness and contrast separate from the the walls. (Also in the original photo, paint chips were coming off the walls in several spots, which showed up as glowing spots in the dark parts of the inverted image, so they were edited out to keep the look on the walls smooth.)

(edit: When I refer to curve adjustments, I'm not talking about the stairs, they actually do curve like that in real life...the architecture was not altered here)

Beautiful staircase, you would feel really drunk, walking down those. I love the lighting on the sides, as well. Great shot!
The writing is wonderful, thank you for posting it!
I was wondering about this, however.
"It had cost him $1.45 of the $1.70 he still possessed."
If he still possesses 1.70, wouldn't that mean that he didn't actually spend anything?
mm... contemplation...

good shot, inverting was definatelly the way to go here, the very dark part at the bottom of the stairs becomes this intriguing place of light, you just want to go and investigae

this "Coffee" shop atall?

yesss, i love this
these lines are beautifully contracting the the view to the final end (or even beginning ...)
well, there are some indices that you have inverted the source, but anyway, it looks damn great...

Congrats on making the most awesome description to a photo on all of DA. That is tragic beauty if I saw/read it. The photo is great too. I think the curved walls and especially the colors on them are perfect and you've composed the photo very nice accordingly, but .. personal taste I guess, but the carpet is uhmm how do I put it nicely.. vomit-inducing since you were postprocessing anyway, I would have toned the carpet differently, darker, maybe texturizing it also, with a smoother surface to compliment the smooth walls.
I hope you dont mind my honesty about the floor, cuz I think you are a brilliant photographer and I couldnt have done it nearly as good myself.

I understand, and I appreciate you expressing your honest opinion But since you mention it, I would like to explain my thoughts...the texture and lightness of the carpet were important to me because of two things: first it created a visual contrast to the dark and smooth walls, and second, it was central to the metaphor of the image, the idea of billions of individual electrons creating light when they step down in energy levels.

Anyways, thank you for the comment

Thanks for the explanation I see your point now, and I do like the gradient light on the carpet, I was mostly objecting to the rough and speckled texture. But I see what you mean with visual contrasts Sorry for my choice of word also, it was entirely meant as fun, but you seem to have taken it that way too

Talking about curves, look at all those crazy curves. It will be hard to walk down those stairs without getting dizzy.

You really did a number in post, and this is something quite unique. Cool colours.

the architecture itself is very surreal looking, but the angle from which you shot just lends to that. fabulous!

i love the general smoothness in this picture.... was there a lot of clean up in this? i personally find the texture of stairs quite interesting here as well. it gives so much more to look.

Nothing too extreme in the cleanup, the spots were all very small and there were probably a dozen of them...just a lot of zooming in and using patch or healing brush...

Thanks for commenting

The perspective looking down is great and I love this little inverted style you've thrown into your darkroom kit. It just looks beautiful, and feels right.

Your attached commentary definitely made me think... and smile.

Great work, Arthur!

It's almost like a drug/drink induced walk; if you get what I mean.
It's surreal and then bends confuse you, but doesn't feel frightening because of the colouring.

The stripe of light at the bottom of the stairs is what keeps attracting my eye. Like the point you're desperately trying to walk to without getting lost in the weird circus maze of mirrors.

(I don't feel i'm explaining myself very well today lol.)
