Description
The physicist and the poet were discussing tragedy and beauty in the coffee shop, probably for no real reason except to make themselves feel better. The poet was playing with his pen. The physicist was playing with a laser pointer, drawing circles around the halogen lamps in the ceiling. They had each been silent for a few minutes. The physicist suddenly remarked, “Light is the most tragic form of beauty in nature.”
The poet swallowed the last of his coffee. It had cost him $1.45 of the $1.70 he still possessed. “How so?”
“In atoms, electrons can be in different orbits around the nucleus. They can move up to higher levels. But they will always fail to stay there. They always fall back to a lower level. Every time an individual electron steps back down, the lost energy is given off as light.”
The poet nodded. “I understand.”
He excused himself and went upstairs to where the payphone was located, next to a closet with no door and a urinal inside. He dropped his last 25 cents into the phone and called his ex-girlfriend. All that we said to her was, “You are a star. I am a laser. Love is gravity.”
_____
This very steep and narrow stairway actually exists in Amsterdam. The original image was underexposed, and then in post production, it was inverted, curves were adjusted and blue tones were bumped up. A slight gaussian blur was applied in the blue channel to reduce noise. A blur layer was also done at the bottom of the stairs to diffuse the light. An adjustment layer was done on the railings to increase their brightness and contrast separate from the the walls. (Also in the original photo, paint chips were coming off the walls in several spots, which showed up as glowing spots in the dark parts of the inverted image, so they were edited out to keep the look on the walls smooth.)
(edit: When I refer to curve adjustments, I'm not talking about the stairs, they actually do curve like that in real life...the architecture was not altered here)

You know, not only is your photography firstrate but so is
the way you share with us how you achieved such perfec-
tion. The way all the lines of sight twist, curve and finally
converge ( and also seem to disappear ) is so beautiful !!
I want this one as a print, too !! I'll be in touch, LOL. Hey,
I might single-handedly pay for you to get an upgrade in
your camera if I keep buying your prints .... I love the
colors - they remind me of those you see in caves - in fact
this image reminds me of the downward pathway into a deep
cavern. Great work.

I really like the color tones you gave it here. Reminds me of a long exposure of a car trail for some reason, those twisting trails. Except in this case perfected, adn clear.

That is a totally surreal staircase. Wow. And congrats on being worshipped and by foureyes. That's a bigger compliment than I can give.

I'm amazed at how you've made something out of nearly nothing. People probably pass this every day and never think of it as beauty, and you have turned it into just that.
Well done, you've captured some amazing curves

Mmm, i had never thought about inverting before, your work is a proof that it can work without being too obvious either. And your description is really good, which makes the global work even more interesting.
Keep it up!

I've always been a fan of inverted colors, and this the best use I've seen of them thus far. It kind of makes me dizzy.
Though it seems there could be a little more noise reduction, I think this is fantastic, and clearly I'm not alone.

you really put a lot of considerations into how you want your pictures to be presented. it's like knowing what you want. maybe that's why you're such a talented photographer. unlike me, i adjustments without giving much thought lol.

Did you write this, or is it from a story somewhere? The stairs are highly intriguing with their ambient lighting and suggestive geometry. Have you been using Photoshop and the camera for a long time?

Impressive. It's got a very "trippy" look to it, and the combination of bright, cool colors on black really got my attention. I love the lines in this as well, and the fact that you didn't have to manipulate the image's structure at all is even more interesting. The color is fantastic, as the blue and purple seem to flow down the stairwell.
Great work on this, nice editing too.
