Perhaps some were expecting (dreading?) some sort of long philosophical rant here. Nah, I'll skip it this time....Related content

Very nice, I've seen allot of pics of those windows, finally a pic that is more than just "purty" with repeition. This contains balance and gemotrical soundness... and oh yes... its "purty"
BTW I live in K-zoo, so yeah... photography 100, yeah there was about 4 people that I know choose to take pictures of that same building.

That's funny. I can image everyone walking into that class and going, "Oh man, you took a picture of that too?"
I don't know what it is about Kalamazoo, but for some reason it's a suprisingly great city for photography.

Perhaps this is an abstracted representation of the collapse of a building. Perhaps describing the inevitibility of the fall of architecture, the semi-permanence of it?

Oops. I suffer from premature commentation. Sorry. Anyways, I was just going to say how much I admired your works. This shot stands out from your others to me. It's both beautiful and a clever optical illusion.

Now this is a building that has been designed by an architect with a vision. And you wonderfully captured it.

First impression was that I was looking at the reflection of a tall building, but looking further into it, itβs just a repetition of the same part of the building. This photo once more shows that youβve got a good eye for these shots. A very clear image with vivid colours.

Well, since you asked to pull out the philosophical guts out of your work, here goes:
I've always admired your creative genius behind naming your shots. And without the title you chose, this shot would have meant way less than it does now. But who knows, you probably had other good ones in your head.
When I looked at the image and saw the title I instantly realised what it should mean or try to portray. This is about us, humans, building and advancing ourselves continuously, increasingly depending more on what shouldn't be than what always was. Rising higher and digging deeper, disrespecting the skies and earth. Playing god as an ultimate (and concieted) triumph over nature.
But we end up having all that we create, turn into our worst enemies. The complexity of life makes us vulnerable. More clauses we add to a sloution lands us in deeper complicacies. We shift the equilibrian dangerously aginst our favour. Ultimately we are undone by our never ending thirst for superiority and blatant disregard of nature and its simpler ways.
Simply put. Our doom is of our making.
.
.
.
I'll probably regret posting this later.
The only downer is all those jackolantern balloons in the windows trying to kill the serious mood a little.

Excellent analysis Lots of points you made here that were strikingly close to some of my own thoughts as I was working on this shot.
Civilization is always building and advancing blindly, and that puts it in danger of collapse. Our doom is indeed of our making. The only siginifcant point I differ on is with nature. I don't think that human society can ever go back to "simpler ways." I am an advocate of advancing technology. The problem is our advancement comes with a lack of foresight. Humanity needs to learn to manage its progress and maintain that equilibrium.
Now I'll complicate matters and throw this out there: deconstruction as a theory is something which attempts to challenge the attempt to establish meaning in a text. It says that words only refer to other words, so any attempt at interpretation of a text ultimately creates contradiction. In a broader sense it says that human history is full of attempts to define reality, and in the end this has misled humanity by the creation of centralized power structures which claim to promote " truth."
So, taking the suggestion of that philosphy, we are looking at a need to 'deconstruct' our views of progress and civilization. Or something like that
Thank you very much for venturing forth with your analysis

Actually, I fear that in truth your vision of inevitable failure is more accurate, I was just trying to be optimistic
Perhaps put another way, we can see that something bad is probably going to happen, so we can either choose to say " Well we're screwed" and not doing anything or say "Let's try to stop this" and fight against overwhelming odds to try and prevent it on the slim chance we can succeed.

vxt In reply to welder [2003-12-07 21:31:20 +0000 UTC]
That is actually more appropriate, 'the need to deconstruct our views of progress and civilization'.
I wasn't happy sounding much like a greenpeace activist there, because I realised the photo does not have nature in it or in the theme. Just didn't feel like editing some more.
I was mainly trying to say its how we destroy the natural balance of things which effects us adversely in the end. Developing a technology and applying it without consideration of its unforeseen or even possible and foreseen negative consequences, like you mentioned, the blind advancement of civilization is what puts us in danger of collapse. For example: extensive use of natural gases and use of nuclear technologies that yields mega tonnes or nuclear waste every year.
I can see the slight difference between our interpretations lies in the fact that I looked at this image as if looking into a crystal ball and seeing our civilization's inevitable failure, while you saw it more as a warning which should teach us to examine our ways more carefully before stepping farther.

thats what i call a mindbender. I love the way it kinda makes me naturally move my head to the right. The reflections look very bizarre, its bent geometry at its best. Brilliantly captured

So I'm still not sure if this is a manipulation or a capture of a very weird building. Care to give any hints?

It's a very weird bending, basically curving mirrored glass
