Really like the wild dog look for him! Orthrus has always been one of my favorite critters ever since playing an old Megami Tensei game as a kid.

From the looks of those short jaws, your Orthrus must have a powerful bite (typically short muzzles are seen in strong biters like short-faced bears, hyenas, and pitbulls). Other factors play a role as well such as jawbone density, tooth structure, and muscle mass.

But overall, this beast's bite is WAY worse than his bark! Can't wait to see Humbaba.

This is so different from Your usual stuff, and kind of not in a good way, but that's just my opinion. Love when you do this kind of stuff [link]

hehe, good to know your opinion, I'm still using that level of detail for my official works, these sketches are fast because its a fast practice everyday

I think these are just quick sketch exercises. Wen is aiming to do one of these a day so if he goes into that kind of detail he won't have time to do anything else.

Nice. I like how you have it split down the middle with the colors. I usually don't like that style because it comes off looking weird but you pulled it off. I like all the differences you can see fron one side to the other which is a nice change as well.

what is this from?

thecucuyo In reply to Hergman [2013-04-15 15:02:07 +0000 UTC]

It's a monster from Greek mythology called Orthrus. It's kind of like Cerberus' slightly-less-awesome kid brother.

avancna In reply to thecucuyo [2013-12-22 00:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Orthrus is Cerberus' older brother: the Greek poet Hesiod claimed that Orthrus mated with his mother Echidna to father Cerberus, the Hydra, the Sphinx, the Chimaera and the Nemean Lion.

How about that? You learn something new every day.Β

...wait. So...Orthrus is Cerberus' brother AND father?

well...dang. Dem Greeks, mang.

thecucuyo In reply to avancna [2013-12-22 05:25:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I picked up on that. =3=

Is it me, or is that a trend is most pantheonic mythologies? Didn't the Egyptians do that as well? I'm distinctly remembering Isis and Osiris being related as well as being married.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

avancna In reply to thecucuyo [2013-12-22 05:37:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, a lot of ancient cultures had the pantheons be all related to each other, what them all (usually) springing from the same source. Β With the Ancient Egyptians, it was a reflection of how the royal family married within the family in order to maintain the blood's sacred purity (to the point where some dynasties became so inbred so as to make hillbillies look normal).
And yes, Isis, Osiris, Set and Nephthys were all sons and daughters of Geb the Earth and Nut the Sky.

interesting.

someone in the comment mentioned hercule. i do remember that one of his Works involved a Shepperd (?) and his two headed dog. is this it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thecucuyo In reply to Hergman [2013-04-15 18:08:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Orthrus was a sort of cattle-dog working with someone named Eurytion to protect a herd of red cattle belonging to a giant named Geryon. As part of his 12 trials, Heracles (or, Hercules as he was later called in Roman mythology), killed Orthrus, Eurytion, and Geryon, and retrieved Geryon's herd of cattle.
