Description
Spectacle is another element that Sonic was known for. Sonic's speed is a spectacle in itself, but there was far more than his speed. The cutscenes in the Classic games were always full of action and drama. You finish an act, and you immediately encounter one of Eggman's robots or Eggman himself and leap into battle. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles smacked the emeralds out of Sonic! Eggman's robot actually set an entire forest on fire! Sonic started the Ice Cap Zone snowboarding! Sonic Adventure also had its large share of spectacles. These things were cool to look at, they were spectacular! But nowadays, there's barely any spectacle in the cutscenes. There's no action or drama. There's barely any movement. If you watch today's cutscenes- in Colors, Generations and Lost World - you'll see that Sonic and friends are simply standing around. Once in a while, they'll move their arms or blink. They rarely jump into action. There were a few action cutscenes in Lost World where Sonic kicks a conch out of Eggman's hand, and knocks Tails into a trap by accident, but these are miniscule action moments that only last a second. Where are the cool cutscenes were Sonic kicks robot butt, like in Unleashed's opening intro? Where are the epic in-game cutscenes like in SA2's Metal Harbor, where Sonic takes a ride up a rocket? I want to see Sonic and the others do COOL things again! Sega, bring back the spectacle to Sonic games!

Glad some people love Sonic Unleashed. People will go on and on about the Werehog shit, but admist all that, it had the overall presentation down pat for the first time. It felt like Sega hired writers from Disney's greatest hits. It had it all: a good amount of comedy, a great character in Chip (enough about how he was annoying and all; www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejibae… @ 30:52), a nice diverse soundtrack (even if it didn't have the rock music that defined the Adventure games), some of the best visuals ever, stunning direction in cutscenes, and some deeply touching moments that never moved into crazy Nicholas Sparks territory (i.e. Sonic's death in Sonic '06).

The Werehog was fun. It was finicky because of the camera not wanting to cooperate with the player and sometimes Sonic wouldn't have a drop shadow.

You're right. I absolutely want action and drama to appear in the games but not too much like the archie comics. I like well balanced stories i.e the stories that doesn't have too much comedy like in Colors and Generations (even though both of these games were okay) nor does it have too much seriousness.

I don't think it's a good franchise anymore, that's why I want change. And before you say something like "Well just move on", I'm still a fan of the series and I want the best for it.

Change? Sega? They've been putting out shitty game after shitty game ever since Sonic 3, the only reason they're still afloat is because the 12 year old sonic fans buy the bullshit they put out, just because Sonics on the cover of the game, and that's what Sega is counting on. Has anyone asked for a hover board game with a shittily voiced hawk? Has anyone asked for a shitty Arabian Nights ripoff? What I see people asking for is Chao Gardens, and running in loops and shit.

Oh lol. It would seem you're one of those Classic fans who say that no game past Sonic 3 have been good. Have you even played any of the games you're talking about? Blind hate has made you extreme Classic fans as a whole look bad, and now others call people such as yourself "nostalgiatards", "Classic fanboys" and "purists". Hopefully you haven't complained about "green eyes" too, lol.
The Sonic Riders games and the Storybook games are nothing more than spin-offs. They're just "extras" to the Sonic series and have no affect on the main title games or the series' canon. Jet, Wave and Storm only show up in those games, and there are only two Storybook games in existence. These games were only created to offer variety in the Sonic series' and there's nothing wrong with variety. If you don't like them, then don't play them. Don't even BUY them.

Not even LOL, I actually started on the shit that is Sonic Adventure 2, and I honestly could not give less of a shit about Sonic's design, but its been evident over the years that Sega has been a corpse of its former self, but don't take my word for it, one of Sega's former employees can attest to this aswell.
From the ex employee's blogger before Sega cleared it
“Sonic Team are a relic from a past age who have overstayed their welcome. For the same marketing reasons that their name was initially kept (and has since backfired) they should be dissolved – it may already be too late for NiGHTS (and I really hope it isn’t and they manage to turn it around, which with Iizuka-san’s passion for the project is a possibility), but for the good of the company’s image; for the future of Sega’s other prestigious IPs and lastly for its iconic mascot it needs to be done… before they release another Sonic game with a transforming Evil ‘Night’ Sonic who looks like a werewolf and can stretch his arms out Dhalsim-style. It will happen, mark my words.“
Take note that this was made before Sonic Unleashed was released, which was probably the reason they cleared his page. To add on, its not just this guy that's pissed at the company, pretty much every employee at Sega has his/her vexes for the company, and for good reason.

“Sonic Team are a relic from a past age who have overstayed their welcome."
It sounds like that guy thinks today's Sonic Team is the same as the Sonic Team from the Classic and Adventure ages, but it's not. The only one left from the original team is Iizuka himself. The people today may as well call themselves "New Sonic Team", because so many tend to think that they're the same geniuses who came up with the Classic and Adventure games.
Now I agree with you, the current team is lost in direction and has no idea what they're doing. They're aware of it too, which is why they keep handing Sonic over to other companies, like Bioware for Sonic Chronicles, Dimps for a few of their games like Sonic 4, Nintendo for Lost World and Big Red Button for Sonic Boom. But the company itself shouldn't be dissolved, because Sonic is a huge gaming mascot. He has the potential to be great, he just needs better people to show how great he is. The current team is lost- THEY'RE the ones who need to be dissolved, not the entire franchise.
Sonic belongs in better hands. Hell, many fans are showing that they can make better games than Sonic Team. Look at Lake Ferperd's "Before the Sequel" and "After the Sequel". Look at Sonic World. Sonic would probably be better off in the fans like Lake's hands than in Sonic Team's hands.

Keep in mind that that post was made years ago, back before Sonic Unleashed was released. But yeah, Sonic Team's only goal nowadays is to meet their quotas, they don't care about the gamers. It seems to me that the real issue itself is the ignorant fanbase that constantly buys these half assed games, they're the ones that keep this company afloat. They don't buy the games because they have good reviews or gameplay, its because of the fucking blue hedgehog on the cover, And I know Sega could put out good games if they wanted to, hell, they put out games like NiGHTS and Samba De Amigo which, funny enough, got better scores than any other Sonic game except Secret Rings, which tied with NiGHTS in score. To add on, look at Valkyria Chronicles, that game got positive ratings throughout, but I think the biggest kicker about this is is that Sega cares more about these titles in terms of making good gameplay than their own mascot that got them to where they are now. Sega knows the Sonic franchise is terrible, but they also know for a fact that the fanbase won't let them down, and that's why they put out nothing but shit with a 40-$60 price tag slapped onto it. It's the fanbase at fault, not the company itself. They made the company lazy, and the only real piece of advice to give if people want Sonic to improve is to get some standards and not buy the next half assed game that Sega puts out.

Hmmm, what if someone just wants to play the game for fun? No law against that is there?

If they think its fun, then yes, that's fine, so long as they buy the copy of the game they want used so that it doesn't fuel the developer's pockets and help them put out more half assed games.

I definitely agree with you on that. I am very against the casuals in the fanbase who eat up every piece of garbage that Sega shoots out of their ass. Buying these games just because Sonic's face is on it is definitely the reason why Sega feels they can just cut back and make whatever they feel like. And the biggest issue I have with these casuals is that if you say ANYTHING negative about Sonic or the series as a whole, they'll throw a bitch fit. They'll defend Sega to the death for mediocrity. It's really sad what the fanbase has become.
I honestly believe the blame can fall on both sides. Sega is the company, bottom line. They don't HAVE to half-ass it just because the fans accept their garbage. The old Sonic Team had a thing called "passion", they were out to make Sonic great regardless of the fans. The new Sonic Team is lazy and only sees Sonic as a cash cow, and the fans are NOT helping. It's up to us fans to set Sega straight, and we can start by not buying games that we don't like. So many fans buy the games even though they don't find them appealing!
Well, I'll say OTHER fans. I haven't bought a game since Unleashed.
