Description Note: This is just my opinion

And finally, we are at 2014.  The debut of The Sonic Boom spin-off series.  Before I begin, let me just say that I never hated Sonic Boom as a whole.  I think things like the TV show and Fire and Ice are decent, Shattered Crystal is okay, but Rise of Lyric..... not so much.  If you like this game, then I'm sure you have your reasons.  Now in my opinion, Rise of Lyric is pretty much what I first expected Sonic 06 to be when I saw people endlessly bashed on it, but it's even worse.  Unlike 06 where it's possible to enjoy it for the soundtrack or even just breaking it thanks to the state it was in, I just can't with this game.  Yes, the cutscenes are decently animated and voice acting is nice (except when the characters constantly talked during gameplay), but the graphics themselves failed to be just as good as the environment selection, the music was forgettable, and even if I could enjoy it for just breaking it, Bigredbutton made a patch that canceled things like the Infinite Jump glitch.  This made things worse because ignoring the fact that the game was in an inexcusable state in terms of being finished, Rise of Lyric was just so boring.  Everytime I try to come back to it, I just loose all interest and play something else because it feels like I'm playing a typical shitty PS2 licensed game like Nicktoons Unite.  Combining that with everything else, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric made me feel like I was playing a late Alpha to early Beta version of a game that probably would've sucked anyway. All I can say is, you're not missing much.

Coming back to this post, this may be just me, but I still think the game is good for its own right.

That may just be me loving beat-em-ups and not even minding the small fram hiccups here and there. I've seen much worse. (Superman 64)

Actually, the backstory on this game is that it was planned for PC, PS4, and XBOX1, but Nintendo got involved.

Also, I kind of enjoyed Nicktoons Unite. But not the GameCube version, as that one had a LOT of flaws in exchange for four-player co-op.

Yeah, this game ended up suffering because of Nintendo. I this stupid deal extended its hindrance out to Forces in a way.

Yeah. I feel that deal should have been kept to Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, (one of my favorite entries in the series), Sonic Lost World Wii U, and Shattered Crystal. At least SC gave us the best of both worlds: speed and exploration. Although the levels tend to have dragged out a bit.

It’s weird to because considering Forces development, I have a feeling that Forces was going to be the last one, but Sega wanted to take their time with it. Nintendo demanded a game for 2014, leaving Sega with no other option but to rush Big Red Button. Shattered Crystal wasn’t an option since the deal was strictly Wii U. If they let M&S 2014, which is part of a Nintendo exclusive series to begin with, why not Smash since Sonic is in it.

Actually, the problem with Smash Wii U is mainly because Sonic was a guest character compared to Sochi.

Wait, it was strictly Wii U? All the more reason for them to have scrapped Lost World 3DS. (I actually took that back, considering the awful level design.)

Ok... then what’s Sochis excuse? Look, that game holds a certain place in my heart (because of some tragic events at the time), but it was pointless to make it exclusive to the Wii U since the series has been Nintendo exclusive to begin with.

Yeah, it was strictly for Wii U. And if you guessed that it was Nintendo’s poor marketing that caused it, you’d be correct.

The Mario & Sonic Olympic Games series heavily focuses on Mario AND Sonic.

And you aren’t alone. After what happened with Rio Wii U, it made me appreciate the Sochi version even more.

Eh... I guess. Either way, that deal gave jack shit to both companies, with Sega getting the shorter end of the stick.

I played both versions, they both have things that I like and dislike, but the Wii U version was the bigger flop here. I hated how the tournament mode worked in the Wii U version, the fact that you have to tap the charge button in some cases, the forced split screen, and cheap online A.I.

On the bright side, at least it gave me some fun Miiverse material.

Yeah... The removal of the motion controls just because people complained about them was stupid, and being forced to play as your Mii without access to an actual shop was even worse. Having to rely on luck to get the clothing you need. And the events took away the charm of the series, because they removed the Dream Events.

Also, the music was honestly forgettable. The Wii U version was THAT bad. The 3DS version didn’t have these issues, thankfully.

I enjoyed a few tracks like the hub theme, which I think is a cool idea actually. I also enjoyed the Soccer music. I always play as my Mii anyway, so I only found it as a problem when I’m picking team members in the tournaments. I enjoyed Boxing, Volleyball, the duel events (despite the lack in charm) and that’s it. Rhythmic Ribbon isn’t as fun as Figure Skating Pairs. If only they combined the Wii U and 3DS versions at least, then we would’ve something better.

Trust me, I see where you’re coming from. The motion controls made me love this series. To see it taken away because of a vocal minority is just stupid.

Oh yeah, the motion controls. I just hope these games on Switch bring them back.

They did the same for Sochi to a degree, but they still controlled fine.

Yeah. I had no issues with them on Sochi. Same with the previous entries. I’m hoping for a Switch and 3DS version that brings the series back to its former glory after Rio Wii U screwed everything up.

If we’re gonna talk about least favorite games in Rio 2016.... Remember Table Tennis from London? It was great there. In Rio, I don’t know what the fuck they did, but they butchered it.

BronyVideoGamer In reply to gameman5804 [2017-11-20 20:07:12 +0000 UTC]

They really did. They didn’t make the same mistake for the 3DS version, which was the same as Table Tennis in the DS version of the first game. Just press the button once with good timing, and you hit the ball.

But that A.I. though.  I spent so much time on that game, just for getting the gold medal.

Fuck that game.

but the difficulty just hits you like a truck.  I had trouble on normal to be fair, but hard is impossible.

To some degree, yes. But IMO, the 3DS version of Rio is better than the Wii U version. Every game in this series has a unique charm to it that I enjoyed.

True. Rio on Wii U tried to be more realistic, which was not a very good idea.

Agreed. That’s the same issue I have with Super Mario Odyssey. I didn’t like that it tried to be a realistic Mario game, which is known for its cartoony atmosphere.

I plan on Playing Odyssey when I get my Switch. But I still see a more cartoonish style there.

I kind of didn’t with the settings you go through. But the fans sending death threats for spoilers on the game made me take it back. I’m more used to the gameplay of 64 DS, Sunshine, Galaxy 1, and 2 compared to the original 64, which didn’t tell you where to go. Odyssey has this same issue where the Moons are hidden until you come across them. And there are a LOT of Moons in the game.

Lastly, the game felt TOO easy, IMO.

I adore the Sonic Boom TV Series at the moment. Season 2 of the TV Series is literally so self-aware. It pokes fun at not only their own sub-franchise (blue arms, neckerchief, etc.), but also the Sonic fanbase in general. It also gives shoutouts to other sorts of media. The characters are hilarious as well (Sonic realises his own flaws due to his ego, Sticks being the queen of fourth-wall-breaking, etc.). The Japanese cast is currently recording voices for Season 1 of the TV Series, which will be on Netflix Japan.

Fun fact: Jun'ichi Kanemaru, Sonic's Japanese voice actor, did not know what Sonic Boom/Toon Sonic looked like until just recently. Apparently, while Jun'ichi was recording his lines for the Sonic Boom games, SEGA did not show any Sonic Boom-related images to him.

AceTimeRad In reply to gameman5804 [2017-06-28 02:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Nope. They are still recording the lines for Season 1 so far. SEGA of Japan was sort of skeptical whether to produce a Japanese dub of the Sonic Boom/Toon TV Series like they did for the Sonic Boom/Toon games.

SEGA of Japan is now more open to the Sonic Boom sub-franchise, as they are selling Sonic Boom merchandise there.

I actually really liked the environmental design (too bad about the PS2-quality texture resolution though), it felt very organic to me. And the music is really good if you take the time to listen to it. Especially the boss themes.
And at the very least, I think I'll enjoy it when I play it. I liked the Werehog, and I like that this comes with more puzzles and platforming than that.

Indeed! I really like the new unexplored world/universe of Sonic Boom. If Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was released on the PC, the CryEngine 3 graphics would make the world look absolutely spectacular.

HyperSonicXdA In reply to AceTimeRad [2017-06-28 06:15:03 +0000 UTC]

As I get it, it was going to be PS4/XBO at first, but Sega requested a port to the Wii U, which couldn't really take the CryEngine, and that alone took up a lot of the development time. Hence why the game was so unpolished.
