Make sure you're on the right layer, and that you're checking the "colorize" box in your Hue/Saturation options. C:

I'm experimenting with techniques in this tutorial right, but can't seem to figure out what the next step does.

I've just made a transparent layer, make a layer under it and filled it in with light grey, but I'm not sure what effect this makes? Your examples here don't have any colour, so I'm a bit confuzzled. o_O

Using a gray background is just a way to evaluate how the colors look and makes it easier to find any spots you might have missed. Some people like to use it, others don't. Personal preference really. C:

Yeah, but it's not necessary. Cel shading works best when you have clean lines, so any method you use to achieve that should be fine. C:

Brilliant tutorial. This is almost the same way I do my cell shading, but you do things a tad differently. I'll definitely have to try it this way. ^^

Very nice tutorial. Many things I didn't know, gotta try them out

It's so interesting to see that although almost every modern artist has similar tools, everyone uses them in a slightly different way.

Thanks for the info and sorry for not having written for a long time. Still watching regularly though. Keep up the good work!

WhipsmartMcCoy In reply to Chibi--Sama [2009-04-07 05:58:52 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! It's really amazing to see the wide variety of work being created every day. It's definitely an exciting time to be an artist.

It's cool, I understand. Everyone seems so busy nowadays (myself included X3), it's hard to keep up. It's nice to hear from you again, though. Any chance this means you'll be more active in the coming months? C:

Well, that's my intention. Many projects already written/planned that just need to be drawn... but time, jeez! I wish I was already old and retired so I would have time to do art all day

SDL Tokyo. I read the concept and it sounds like loads of fun. I still want to finish that Red Ball storyline first though

If you decide to join SDL Tokyo Luna will be rooting for you

Still, I hope you can get some use out of it. C:

OWAIT. That method making transparent lineart layers would be super helpful if there were a Channels tab in my version of Photoshop. 8D (-cough-elements-cough)

-Cheap-

WhipsmartMcCoy In reply to ZombieBunnyPro [2009-04-04 18:56:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah, sorry about that. I know nothing about Photoshop Elements. I'm still running Photoshop 7.

Here's an alternate method:

1. After scanning in your lineart, clean it up using the brush tool and Image>Adjustments>Levels. Try to get it as crisp and uniform in color as possible.

2. Next, if your lineart is not already black, use the Levels adjustments to make it so.

3. Hit the "D" key to get the default colors in your color pickers - black foreground, white background.

4. With your lineart layer selected, go to Select>Color Range. This will open up a window that gives you a variety of settings and a preview of your image. Change the settings to read as follows:

Select: Sampled Colors
Fuzziness: 200
"Image" radio button selected
Selection Preview: None

Click OK. You will see that your lineart has been selected.

5. With your lineart still selected, make a new layer. On the new layer, go to Edit>Fill and fill the selection with whatever color you like. Deselect.

6. If you hide the visibility on the original lineart layer, you will see that you now have a copy of the lineart on the above transparent layer.

The results of this method aren't quite as clean as the one using the Channels, but it achieves a comparable effect. Let me know how this works out for you (or if I just totally confused you beyond belief - it's difficult to talk about this stuff without a visual aid XP).

Hahaha, well you can always use it if you need to churn out a colored piece fairly quickly. It's much faster than doing full on digital painting. C:
