Description
Cover for Jay Company's Variant issue #1 of Mercy Thompson published by Dabel Bros.Lines by Eric Basaldua
Colors by me.
this one was like a dream really, when eric said he was going home to draw this one night i was so jealous thinking somebody else would get to color an ebas cover with wolves (my favorite animal)
when i started this (flatting it myself) i was really pumped about it, and promptly jumped right in to it feet first.
one thing about jumping into a cover is when you go in only with half your heart you might end up coming back out of it a little before you are done, but you stay safe in knowing you wont be over-thinking anything. but when you jump in feet first, you fall into it and can have your heart broken, much like love in fact.
i had my heart broken, as this didn't exactly turn out as i wanted. i guess in the end i'd wished the sunshine was someplace else.

Hey, I'm making a fanlisting for Mercy and I was wondering if I could use this image to make a few link buttons? You'd be credited, of course.

I absolutely love this cover! Her skin's perfect!
For the skin flat/dark areas, do you use more of a semi-saturated brownish orange, or more of a less saturated color? I've yet to nail it down I feel.

well it's usually about halfway from grey to 100% saturation. but this character in particular is native so with that i go a little darker.

Halfway...Thanks ^^ I usually take a few tries before I get the base to look the way I want, so maybe this can help me home in on it quicker!

well both the way me and blond work is to make all of our base tones more desaturated and color with saturated colors.

MatthewHuntley In reply to WhiteHowler7 [2010-03-05 23:02:11 +0000 UTC]
Not overly saturated though, right? And do you go back over with a halfway saturated, full brightness color for skin highlights?

WhiteHowler7 In reply to MatthewHuntley [2010-03-05 23:17:56 +0000 UTC]
right.
and actually the way we use screen mode, it's not necessary to go over it with a seperate color.

Do you use that first skin tone color repeatedly? Gotcha! Thanks again for the help
Though, who's Blond?

no, i pick a base tone, then i pick one more and usually use that for mids and highlights.
another colorist you can feel free to ask questions of, he's my boyfriend too

Beautiful work, but did you read the books before creating the art work.
I am a big fan of Patricia Briggs work and her character Mercy would never wear a outfit like that.

i didn't read the books, or draw this outfit.

How can you draw a character and capture the essence of that character if you have not read the books.
I am currently reading the newest book Silver Borne, where she is described as "not eye candy" and wearing a a pair of coverall with grease under her fingernails. Plus half way through the series she is rape, and has a hard time having a man touch her let alone wearing something as revealing as the outfit she is in.
Don't get me wrong the piece is amazing, I just don't think it represents the character.

when you're a hired artist you dont have to read all of the source material. you get a description on how they look, or pics of how they have been previously shown. thats it.
but you're missing the point here, i didn't draw this, i only colored it. not to mention it's a variant for a company known for sexy variant covers.
and then there's the little fact that this comic probably wasn't done to satisfy every current fan of the series, but to bring the series to a whole different crowd of people.
i get you dont like it, but i had nothing to do with why you dont, so take your complaining elsewhere.

I am sorry, I didn't read the description at the beginning that you colour the illustration, so i understand that you are not responsible for the content.
As for the my complaining, I went to art school and have been a graphic designer/art director for over twelve years and have had to put up with criticism it is part of the business.

it's not putting up with criticism, it's putting up with whiners. as you said you didn't know i just colored it, and i get a fair amount of people glossing over the fact that i am mostly a colorist, and i get lots of negative comments that generally dont deal with my part, it's like they are blaming me for something i didn't do.

so i'm a whiner, thanks. By the way I like your work, but i won't look at it anymore. Goodbye

well you kind of were whining that this cover doesn't capture the feel you had for the character.

this aMAZING! i love how you draw your wolves, it reminds me of the manga Wolf's Rain style. the back ground and the girl's anatomy is simply the work of a VERY talented and well educated artist. Wel done, sir. ^^ (or ma'am xD)

Great coloring by the way! Regardless if the wolves are all different colors are in the novels... but whose to say that those are the werewolves of Adam's pack.

It's always best to put everything into it, no matter how bad being disappointed might feel!
I'd feel bad for the artist that doesn't reach enough to be disappointed in the first place.
