Um.. A little correction(?)
They say that if you say "Pearl of the Orient", that would be Hong Kong.
And if you say "Pearl of the Orient Seas", that would be the Philippines ;w;

- pearl of the orient, a nickname that can refer to hong kong
- pearl of the orient, a nickname that can refer to sri lanka
- pearl of the orient (seas) , the historical and romantic moniker for the philippines
also, "perlas ng silanganan" from the national anthem can mean either "pearl of the orient" or more literally "pearl of the east" (and the orient is the east, or so they generally say)

Ooh, and incidentally, Timor Leste (East Timor) has recently submitted a petition to join ASEAN (as of March 2011), and Papua New Guinea has been an "special observer" since 1981.
There's also something called ASEAN Plus Three - Created to improve existing ties with Asian heavy-hitters China, Japan, and South Korea. Nowadays, the bigger ASEAN Summits also include neighboring nations like India, Australia, and New Zealand; as well as allies America and Russia.

Ah, no problem! ASEAN stands for Association of South East Asian Nations - A geo-political and economic organisation formed back on August 8, 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Thailand. Since then, other nation members have grown to include Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, and Laos!
Hetalia-wise, the only nations Himapapa has made official who are actually in ASEAN are Vietnam and Thailand. O u O

I have nothing against it, but personally I just don't see it being that way? I mean, Spain only started to directly govern the Philippines after Mexico's attempts at a revolution got the Philippines into it too, and if history class and #Katipunan has taught me anything, Spain's treatment of the Philippines isn't exactly very fatherly. ; v ;
Personally I think someone like China would me a more fitting father figure, given their pre-Colonial history even if current events are awful between them now. ; v ;
