-History-
Cajun Kat came to us through an auction of a large lot of Katrina horses. Sh ewas never claimed by the owner, who needed all their money to re-build their house and had to let the horse go. She was found in a water logged field, caked with mud, emaciated and absolutely terrified. She suffered from hoof rot and no one took the liberty of cleaning her up before she went into the auction ring, lame and dirty. Her reserve was $400, which meant she was destined for the slaughter house. A friend of ours knew we had been interested in a horse that could pull a sliegh this winter, so he bid on the horse and bought her for $600. Katrina is still a bit flighty and gets a little nervous when a thunder storm rolls up, but she's filled out nicely and we can't wait for the first snowfall!
_______________________________________________
Well, I used about 50 layers for this one, which was probably unneeded but anyway. I always said I would never have a cold-blood in my stable, but she's nice for a change, enjoying a nice pat instead of lunging at everyone who walks by her like our arabs and thoroughbreds.

Yep! But I need to decide on which Stallion to choose." I know that I only have the Blood Bay one up, but there are others." I will have to get back to you when I decide.

Wow really? cool! But they will also carry a copy of the black gene, but if the foal is hetero chestnut it will only have chestnut offspring, is it possible, since the parents carry a black gene that the foal could possibly throw a black foal? Or would it be totally hetero? wow that sounds complicated

black is the most dominant gene in horses, if it is present the horse will always be black or some variation of it. so if a black stallion and a chestnut mare are bred and the foal comes out chestnut, the foal did not inherit the black at all, and in order for that foal to have black offspring it would have to be crossed with another black horse and hope that the foal inherits it. but if the foal is black then it still carries the chestnut gene, you just don't see it because the black gene is present and that over writes all other colors. so only a black horse can produce a black horse. these two might have had a black parent but somehow they didn't inherit it so it's no longer present in their genes. they would have to be crossed with a black horse to have a black foal. and because they don't have the black gene anymore, if bred they would only produce chestnut foals. but the foal would not be homo chestnut as theres no such thing, so if it was crossed with a black horse then yes it could produce a black foal. it would just be hetero chestnut.

Ah ok that makes sense . . . YAY! If black is dominant why don't we see more black horses? I watch thoroughbred racing and I guess because most of the foundation sires were not black that's why we don't see more black TBs.

yes actually. thoroughbreds were greatly influenced by arabians and while today black is a popular color in them back then it wasn't practical as black horses got over heated in the desert, so while it's present, it isn't very common in either breed. bay and chestnut are the most common colors.

That is logical, the black ones are sooo pretty though! But it seems every race you see the field goes roaring into the turn and all the horses are a shade of brown, kinda boring. I did see a race between four greys once, that was interesting and they were all at different stages of the greying process.

yeah bay is pretty boring i'll admit lol but its the most common color as it's more related to black therefore more dominant than chestnut so when black isn't present its more likely to show up than chestnut though it's not as completely dominant

Yes it is rare but possible. I think if both parents are registered friesians than the chestnut can be registered but if that chestnut has any babies they can not be registered.
