Description I can't believe it was 4 years since I last watched My Life as a Teenage Robot, it seems like it was just yesterday I was checking out the series!  I really love how the art team chose an Art Deco influence for the show, not only is that an awesome art movement in general, but it's something you never see in modern cartoons, it's a really cool idea!  Anyway I obviously attempted a Deco background for this picture, I wanted to keep it pretty simple so you could focus on the characters.  I enjoyed adapting them to fit my style, although the hairstyles were pretty difficult to draw realistically - especially Jenny's crazy Picasso pigtails!  Which character is your favorite?

I LOVE the style contrast between the human-looking humans and the retro-anime-looking robot!!!! Sheldon looks especially great, I'm in love with his expression. He was my favorite character and I used to ship him with Jenny so hard.

I love how slick and stylish this is! Especially with Jenny's design.

(Also thank goodness there wasn't any creepy pervy comments on this...)

Gosh, my childhood. This show was the shit when it used to come on tv. Jenny was always my fave- powers always brings you up a notch or five in my eyes. I honestly didn't recognize Sheldon for a second when I first saw the lineart - might have been all those wrinkles.  I really do adore your style; it has an element of realism while maintaining its cartoonish qualities.

I wasn't lucky enough to have Nickelodeon when this show aired, so I only caught 1 or 2 episodes at the time, but when I watched the whole series online a few years ago I really loved it!  It fits right into the stylish-but-silly Dexter's Lab/PPG style programming which of course is my favorite. ^_^  And I know what you mean about Sheldon, I think he doesn't look quite the same in lineart because he's missing his dark hair!

Oh man this is amazing! You totally captured the 50s esthetic that the show used but in a very different way.
Absolutely love how you designed Jenny. Don't know if I've ever seen a "realistic" take on the character, but this is such a cool design. You did a great job detailing her while still keeping it true to the original design.

Thanks so much!  I've seen a lot of people draw Jenny in their style, rather than the show style, but it's usually a lot heavier on the robot/mechanical influences.  Since I can't draw machinery very well anyway I thought I would stick to the human characteristics - she doesn't look terribly different from the humans in the show anyway.  I want to draw some of these designs again if I get any good ideas!

I always thought Jenny's face realistically has a digital computer eyes and face. Or is she like the robots from the movie irobot?

Wickfield In reply to NathanArtDumpGround [2017-09-16 21:32:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah when Jenny would get damaged in a few eps her eyes looked like they were screens made to look like eyes. The artist's notes desribe her mouth as a cavity and she drinks oil through it, so I think it does open. I tried to draw her face sort of doll like, so it would look more synthetic compared to the human boys'.

I don't mean to brag, but Sheldon kinda reminds me of how I was in high school; average height (still am), gawky, greasy, geeky, weird-looking and I wore a lot of hoodies as well; only difference is that I didn't had much of an acne problem

Well if I'm gonna be real when I was 15-16 I basically had Sheldon's exact fashion sense myself, right down to the burgundy hoodie!  Out of all the characters on the show he definitely had that relatable mid-2000s teen look

So basically you were a female Sheldon more or less? Lol.

Idk, it's hard to imagine you like that at that age though
And yeah I can see everyone saying that they're were like him at that age in during that time, then again it was the fashion

Speaking of that and Idk about you, but I kind of miss the 2000s haha

Wickfield In reply to SceneDemonz [2017-09-17 00:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Um...I'm just going to blame it on the trends at that time! That's why I have to say that I don't miss the 2000s yet!

SceneDemonz In reply to Wickfield [2017-09-17 01:07:46 +0000 UTC]

Really? I kinda miss the 2000s, lol better than having people younger than us gloating about how they're a 90s kid, saying things like "thr struggle of being a 90s kid" etc. I barely remember what happened 6 months ago with me and yet these "kids" miss the 90s when they were probably like age 2 in 1999

Sorry, I kind of rambled off there. But eventually you'll miss the 2000s haha

SceneDemonz In reply to Wickfield [2017-09-17 02:36:37 +0000 UTC]

It's kind of like when people are living at a current era, lets say the 2010s that people complain how the 2010s suck and the 90s were better *rolls eyes*, but when you go back in the 90s people in the time would complain that the 90's sucked and the 70's were better. You see what I'm saying?

Wickfield In reply to SceneDemonz [2017-09-17 02:47:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, honestly I'm fine where I am, I don't see the point in wishing you were in a different era. Especially when you already lived through it once (aka the 90s)!

SceneDemonz In reply to Wickfield [2017-09-17 03:25:42 +0000 UTC]

I see where you're coming from, but tell that to everyone that's so obsessed with the 90s and nostalgia haha.

Small web comics and places like Buzzfeed tries to make 90's nostalgia as a big trend and I'm here like "I don't even remember what I did on this day months ago..."

May I request a process breakdown for the two other characters drawn here?

Wickfield In reply to VGDCMario [2017-09-15 21:47:47 +0000 UTC]

I don't have all the steps saved for Brad and Sheldon, but here's a comparison between the (very bad, rough) sketches and the final lineart.  The actual process is the same as I used for Jenny and all my other drawings at the moment:
