Story: [word count = 516+]
The weather sucked. It was raining yet again. Phoebe hummed a tune as she groomed Tap. "It's raining it's pouring, old man is snoring...", she hummed along the rest. Tap flicked her ears as she relaxed under the soft bristles of the brush as it touched her fur, leaving behind a silky shine. Pawing a hoof as she heard a voice approach, Phoebe stopped humming as Tap moved to the front of the stall. Kat usually had carrots, her favourite snack. Tap neighed loudly, demanding her carrot arrive faster. "Jeez calm down you nutball", Kat exclaimed to the impatient horse. Kat reached the stall and fished the carrot out of her pocket. "Say please", she commanded the grey mare. Tap nodded her head and smacked her lips together as she waited eagerly for the juicy carrot. Kat gave the carrot and stroked Tap's nose as the mare munched on the carrot. "Always win her over with carrots eh?", Phoebe said with a laugh. Kat smiled and replied "Animals love food. That's probably one of the things they love most in the world.... Food". Phoebe giggled in agreement as the watched the grey mare eat. She tossed her head up and down with pleasure and tried to stick her nose in Kat's pockets for more of the tasty orange, crunchy sticks. Giving up, she pouted slightly and went back to enjoying her interrupted grooming session. The two girls talked for a while. The trainer and jockey had become good friends and knew each other well. Phoebe could see that Kat was still pale. "You don't look like you are getting better Kat", Phoebe said with concern. "Oh I'm fine", Kat brushed off her feelings of being unwell. "But I do need to rest a bit before the race", Kat relented. The brunette sounded exhausted as she walked back to the sleeping quarters. "Man I wonder what's up with her.... What do you think Tap?", Phoebe asked the horse. Tap just snored as she had fallen asleep during her grooming session. Phoebe left the stall quietly, leaving London outside the stall to watch over the champion mare. The big mastiff was lying on his back with his paws in the air as he dreamed of chasing things. "Oh you big doofus", Phoebe muttered and sat herself on a nearby bench so she could talk to Alex. She missed him like crazy.

The trumpet called the major race of the day. The rain increased in tempo and Tap pranced. She seemed to like the rain, which was a good thing given that's all she seemed to be racing in lately. The mare gave a healthy buck as she was led by a lead pony to the gate. The grey mare was in fine shape, unlike her trainer. Kat's vision had started to blur as the day went by and her head pounded like she was being hit with a hammer. Johanan could tell there was something wrong with his wife. But she refused to say anything about her health. He cursed stubborn women under his breath. Suddenly Kat wobbled. Johanan grabbed her as she fell into him. She was shaking uncontrollably. "Johanan. Help me", she whispered as she felt her body loosing touch with her mind. Her vision was completely blurred and felt very dizzy. She hardly noticed as her husband bundled her small body up in his arms and raced to the nearest doctor. Johanan couldn't believe how light she was. His concern mounted tremendously. As did his panic. Out of everything he'd been through he never felt more scared in his life than at this present time.
