Maria is in Imperial terms an aberration. Every tank is psychologically conditioned to be unquestioningly loyal and obey orders without question. Whilst some personality traits are tolerated the Second Imperium does its best to prevent a tank from fully asserting their emotional and social abilities. Ensuring they are reliant entirely on their masters for their physical and emotional well being.

Maria is unique in many ways. She is the largest tank ever grown, a result of the random genetic sequencing used in the process of creating them. Secondly she is resistant to the mental conditioning used by the Imperial military and they have resorted to ever more extreme ways of reconditioning her when her personality began to assert itself.

Maria is sexually aware, something that is not promoted among the ranks however there have been a few individuals that experienced 'awakening' at the hands of their male superior officers. Openly homosexual Maria has found herself attracted to the most unlikely of partners, in this case a former Imperial assassin sent to kill her and her 'sisters' when they defected.

Maria is also very socially adept and has managed to embrace many aspects of civillian life. Her biggest issue however is her immense strength afforded her by her enhanced genetics. Whilst adept at military aspects, weapon maintenance, training and tactics, Maria finds herself inept at some basic tasks. Having originally worked with tools and items built for her massive size, Maria struggles with everyday objects such as holding a glass or mug often crushing it by accident. It is something that the other Shadow Star crew members work to help her with and she is grateful for their time. One of her best attributes has been in modifying various vehicle mounted weapons into ones that she can carry.

Despite her massive size and advanced healing ability Maria carries more than her fair share of long term injuries. Often used as a 'battering ram' in Imperial engagements Maria would be at the forefront of the most fierce battles. Whilst putting down an infestation of particularly nasty clawed and sharp toothed creatures she was almost sliced open by one. She bears a long scar stretching from the inside of her left thigh, up her abdomen and intersecting her left breast finishing at her collarbone. Despite practically losing her insides Maria fought on and killed the creature with her bare hands. During an engagement with Alliance forces her left ankle was crushed when, in desperation the Alliance soldiers ran her over with a battle tank. Defecting from the Imperial military before it was fully recovered and now without access to Imperial healing technology and drugs Maria wears an ankle brace and regularly takes painkillers. Her left thigh sometimes causes her problems and so she wears an extra compression sleeve over her suit to ease the swelling when on long term operations.
