Description This is the map I made for the book cover without the border, title, or nuclear explosion. It depicts the Middle East some 400 years in a future.

I created this with GIMP and WILBUR, using topographical maps of the region and Google Earth as a reference in re-drawing the coastline with a higher sea level.

Most of the changes you see here are based on a higher sea level, but a lot of other things happened as well. You might check out the Rifts RPG by Palladium Books for more detail.

True for the fictional future setting I was writing, although the new coastline is due to rising sea levels, not direct destruction.

I actually wrote the Rifts Middle East netbook. I think its floating around out there somewhere still.

Cool! I made this map for a novel manuscript I wrote about a year or so ago, which I set in the Middle East of Rifts. The initial rough draft of it was up on the Rifts forum, but I took it down a while back when I started trying to get Kevin to look at it.

because of the political situation they won't touch the Middle East. But showing him my manuscript got me in the door. Since then I've done a Nightbane book and three Robotech books.

That's unfortunate, but understandable.

IIRC, someone before me tried to submit a book with suicide bombers and all this religious stuff and completely ruined it for the rest of us. Zap me your email address via a DA note.

Yikes, I can understand why that would turn them off.

I sidestepped all the cultural and religious baggage by having every city, cultural site, and significant natural resource get nuked into so many glass lakes centuries before the story began. Turf wars become pointless when all the turf is a desolate wasteland, and religious differences aren't so important when you're facing the region-wide extinction of humanity.

Thanks! I find the smear took is very handy for deserts and prairie land sculpts, one of the variations I do on the Eriond technique.
