When I think of 'magic bird,' the first bird that comes to mind is the barn owl. They're so weightless and silent...even moreso than other owls. Their shape is even unusual, which lends to the fact that they belong to a different scientific family - while most owls are Strigidae, Barn Owls are Tytonidae. Wild!I've had the honor of working with a barn owl, and there's just something so different about them...almost something smarter, compared to the barred and screech and great horned owls. I painted this feather specifically for the Anthrocon Charity Auction, so if you're going to Anthrocon this year, you can see it there (and hopefully bid, as it's going towards a good cause!)

I love feather paintings, sadly I can never get mine to scan or get pictures right. Never can find big enough feathers either xD

Thankfully there's no blues in this painting, but whenever I paint blues, my scanner loves to eat them. :< Which is sad because I paint a lot of blue.

Oh my Brenda, I can see why everyone wants this! First thing being, owls are just call kind of awesome and second thing being you've channeled all that awesomeness into a magical, purply, owl of AMAZING! I know you can't sell the original, but can you sell 2D prints of the high res scans? I really bet you'd have some bites! It may not be the 3D painting, but having a 2D print is a really cool optical effect I think!

...They are the most horrid of all creatures. They grow up to be beautiful and majestic with bad voices, but... the babies are *demons*.
Another volunteer at the raptor center were I worked compared their voices to "demon cats on a steam train".

They're such a different kind of owl! Other owls are puffy and more 'still,' but barn owls are more energetic. The barn owl I work with loves to fly back and forth, back and forth when you're trying to get her jesses on :x All the other owls just sit like a bump on a log.

I've (sadly) never had the chance to work with one, but I've been in love with them since I was a child. Near my parent's house is an acre of dense trees, and there's a pair of Barn Owls who live there. I used to sneak in and go sit quietly under the trees, watching them. It's so crazy to have a wild bird like that turn around and look /right/ back into your eyes.
Anyways. They are awesome, agreed.
