Description So here's an interesting question for you all- if one is drawing *literary* characters, who have no given character design, is one still drawing fanart? As an illustrator, I'd say no. But if, as is always going to be the case with what I put up here a devart, no one is *paying* me to create renditions of their characters... well, what does that make an original character design for a pre-existing character?

...anyways, that's hardly an issue here- just a general question of mine. In this case there have been too many visual representations of these characters for me to be able to claim that they are in any way my own, even if my conceptions concerning them are a little different from any that have come before.

The couple in question is Glinda (Galinda) and Elphaba (ne the Wicked Witch of the West) as they are described in the *book* Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch of the West... though I must admit that I didn't have a copy of the book on hand when I drew this. But there's a series of scenes at the end of the finishing school chronicles that gave me the distinct feeling that Elphie and Glinda were interested in each other, and quite probably not platonically. Their final scene together involves an ambiguously (to me, anyway) written kiss as Elphaba takes Glinda to the coach. It is the last time they see each other. Here's my slashtastic interpretation thereof.

Reading Wicked, one gets the sense that the clothing would either be highly plain and serviceable (think mormon) or maybe a turn of the century silk stocking affair, depending on the character. But that bored me and ran counter to everything I'd ever thought about Oz, reading the unillustrated paperback versions of the book as I did in my youth. So I went to town on the outfits. And sort of lost it.

I am not talking about the figures, because if I did I'd be forced to point out all the flaws and then you'd all see them too and hate me forever.

Full-View is your friend.

Elphie + Glinda copyright to Gregory Maguire.... sort of. Original characters twisted from the works of L. Frank Baum. Green-skinned renditions of the Wicked Witch began with Richard Thorp, I suppose. Green is totally just my other flesh tone, at this point.

Eh? That wasn't the last time they saw each other, they saw each other on a few more occasions after that, and with worse and worse results, though they kept hinting more at Galinda/Glinda pining over Elphie.

Unfortunately, embittered as she was, Elphie more or less seemed to give up on her as a lost cause and, worse, a traitor.

I call it fanart, because it all gets blended (for me) with movie adaptations and it's just easier that way. But I see your point. Book illustrations aren't called fanart when they're printed; why should it be different when it's not printed?

I didn't know if it was just me!
I totally got that interpretation of the book
I saw more passion than friendly

I need to re-read it though
it has been a couple of years.

but you drew it pretty much the way I saw it
except maybe Elphies hand not Glindas....

good drawing though.

Well, if it's art based on an existing pop culture, then it's fanart. I could draw an interpretive picture of a song by Bach. And that would be fanart.

The anatomy isn't as bad as you seem to think. Slash, however, can suck my nuts. And I say that to every slash fan I meet, so don't take it personally.

yeah, i just drew a piece where glinda is looking out the window as elphie vanishes into the crowd. i'll post it, and yeah, the scene is sort of vague, but if you read their last meeting, glinda is totally blown away when she sees elphaba she feels like a school girl again, and remembers nothing of her shiz years except sharing a bed with elphie on the way to the emerald city, so to glinda at least, that all was important.

I'm sorry, the art is amazing. The concept, isnt great. I have read the book and seen the Broadway musical and Elphaba and Glinda do not show any lesbian attraction, so I think this is sorta pointless. But the drawing is very amazing

And now I want to read the book.

Hell, not for any "fan-service" through very, very pretty fanart, but, well, although you have a wonderful, wonderful imagination, I don't think I could chalk that kiss up to that.

I do like it. They're both rightfully lovely.

Hmm, I always thought the same thing between the two girls, especially when it's mentioned that Elphaba says, "I love you too much," when Glinda's a little... loopy? after their meeting with Horrible Morrible.
I didn't exactly think they would look so young, but yes. Also, in this picture, it seems as though Glinda kiss Elphie. Did Elphie kiss her? Or am I on crack?
Anywhoodle, I really like your style, sir. I shall now go a wreak havoc on your gallery.

Gregory Maguire always kind of has bit of homosexuality in his books, from my expirence with him as an author. In Wicked's sequal, Liir has a thing with a soldier, but I don want to blow the book for you if you haven't read it yet. There was a definite implied physical attration between Elphaba and Galinda though.

I really like this piece. You did a very nice job.

I am tired of the musical fanart that everyone does.

And I agree, I perked my ears several times in that book fo this pairing. MacGuire does that often though, if you read his other books. He's slashtastic. Still, I prefer to thingk he deeply wanted us to get that impression.

Anyways, this is a gorgeous piece of art. I ADORE their costume designs and their hair and for some odd reason, the lamp in the background. Definately favoriting this

I understand completely what you mean, because the fangirl in me was screaming "Hell yeah! Finally some femmeslesh!" but then the more logical part of me was saying, "It could just be an interpretation of girly closeness observed by a homosexual male writer...".

And I must say, an excellent one o_o; Everyone's telling me to see the play (Wicked ... it has a really fricken AWESOME poster deisgn, so retro and gorgeous), so I should ...

The fandom(? I'm not sure how big it is or if it counts as one... let me rather say the people on lj and anazon...) seems to be pretty evenly split between loving the book and loving the musical.

With that in mind, only half of the internet will hate me if I tell you that except for a few choice scenes, I much prefer the musical. It's sort of dumbed down, yes, but it's also a much more coherent plot, and not half so moralistic. So yes, you should

Thank you so much, my darling, especially as you've not read the book. It's a very... interesting take on the Wizard of Oz story. I can't recommend it wholeheartedly (a little overly moral, a little to obsessed with shockart, a little...not of the good characterization in the later chapters) but it does raise a lot of interesting trains of thought. And a lot of people truely love it.

I could loan you my copy...

Let us go to broadway and I'll take you to the sappy musical spinoff.

And I'll try to update more. *love*

Interesting thought, I think it might be fanart...but sort of like the 'I'm going to make them younger' type of thing.

Outfits came out wonderfully, I still have to finish that book...thing's around here somewhere, ::shuffles about::

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Windschaser In reply to ZarathePirate [2005-01-19 16:47:42 +0000 UTC]

*nods* I see where you're coming from... there’s a higher lever of creativity involved as far as character designs go, but it's still playing in someone else's sandbox. I'll keep future 'illustrations' in 'fanart' then, to stay on the right side of devart's powers that be.

That's a *tough*book to get through. I didn't really like anything after the finishing school arc, quite frankly. 'Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister' is so much better.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
