Description
Something fun for you, Easter Bunnies XD.And for the ones who can actually use it.
! Watch out with the cloth. It should be something that can stand boiling temperature and wouldn't give any extra color.
! Boil the eggs just as long as you like them to be boiled. My personal time in ~7 minutes.
EDIT: You can use brown eggs too, only will the results be less bright and less rich in different colours and textures. But still, the eggs will be noticably coloured.
PS. I'm not taking responsibility if someone burns their fingers or overcomes something else while following this tutorial.
PS 2. Inform your mothers or other mighty persons in the kitchen, before you start.
A DD! Oh man.. that's great! Thanks to ^znow-white for the feature!

Instead of rice you might also try small leafs and herbs. The create some cool patterns.

Thats so pretty! I wish I had known about this, but I"m in American, where all traditions are ground into dust.... And besides, we don't even do colored eggs anymore. (is seventeen)

Hmm.. it's never too late to start colouring eggs. It's not something only kiddos can do. (kiddos can't make that pretty eggs anyway. harhar). Same goes for traditions.. can always strat making your own ones.
And thanks!

Also, a suggestion: You can tie string around in random patters on them before putting the onions on. We sometimes tie a little flowerbud or something on.

Oh, nice.. thanks! I'm saving it for the next year.
And isn't it just a simple and natural way to get the prettiest eggs?

Kulkosvaidis In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-23 17:51:29 +0000 UTC]
It is! My family hates those dies they sell in stores. They soak through the egg and aren't really pretty anyway. With onions, you get all these nice patterns and everything.
Also, I just noticed where you're from. I'm from Lithuania, myself, but, I've seen that a lot of people from Europe (at least the northeast part) tend to do this with their eggs.

Winehorse In reply to Kulkosvaidis [2008-03-23 18:11:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah.. it 's like some northeasern-Europe tradition or what .
The egg paints are yes quite annoying.. doesn't seem very healthy to have a blue egg afterwards |: + when i start doing anything with paints the results will be less.. lets say, pretty.
Doing it like this there's still a surprise moment too .

Great colours! In my family we colour eggs with onion skin every year, maybe I'm going to try it with your method.
Btw:If you smear some butter or oil on them they get a nice shine...

cool. here we use some other natural dyes such as nettle leaves for green and red beet juice for red-purple. and we also mount leaves and then wrap them on eggs with something (nowadays it's usually nylon stockings), or use wax to draw stuff on eggs before putting them in the dye

Ilharess In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-23 16:27:33 +0000 UTC]
we have quite a tradition with egg decoration here. i used to paint them with tempera dyes (don't know if it's a correct english word for that dye, we used to paint with them in school too), and some people even make small knitted patches and attach them to eggs, or dye them and then scratch out the dye or make patterns with stick tha was dipped in some acid

I'm trying to make a website about egg painting. May I feature your tutorial about this technique?
I also would like to know the origin of the technique or anything you would like to tell me about it.

Winehorse In reply to andreim [2008-03-03 14:13:00 +0000 UTC]
Oh.. that would be cool. Just make sure to add my deviantartpage link of such (i dunno how you are going to do it so..) . Oh and show me the page when it's ready ofcourse.. seems like a fun thing!
Well.. this is how we always did it in Estonia when i was small (you can do it with colourful clothes or such too). I wouldn't know the further origin tho.. it's just something i've always known as there were no egg paints to be bought in the shop.

andreim In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-03 20:53:55 +0000 UTC]
The link will be like so: 'nick'.deviantart.com and a link to this deviation. I also would've like to show the location and a first name if that's ok with you.
As for the page, you can see here [link] the general layout. It was a project for school and instead of just doing a local presentation, I decided to round up as many customs as I can.
Also thanks for the info. It seems we used this method too, here in Romania along with colored paper or multi-pattern leafs.

Whoa.. good job on the layout! ^^ And, yeah doesn't surprise me that they use this techinque in other countries too.
The crediting is fine with me.. with location you mean a town or country? For first name you could simply put "Vein" .

Nope. It's just an old custom in my country. At least i think it is... Bottom line is that as people don't have the pretty egg-paints around so they go and find another way.
And thanks for the favourite!
