Description Something fun for you, Easter Bunnies XD.
And for the ones who can actually use it.

! Watch out with the cloth. It should be something that can stand boiling temperature and wouldn't give any extra color.
! Boil the eggs just as long as you like them to be boiled. My personal time in ~7 minutes.

EDIT: You can use brown eggs too, only will the results be less bright and less rich in different colours and textures. But still, the eggs will be noticably coloured.

PS. I'm not taking responsibility if someone burns their fingers or overcomes something else while following this tutorial.
PS 2. Inform your mothers or other mighty persons in the kitchen, before you start.

A DD! Oh man.. that's great! Thanks to ^znow-white for the feature!

I do it this way too I just use more onion skins and some cool plants to give other colours, too. And tiny little plants or leaves give a very special look!

Hmm.. interesting.. could you name some of these plants? Could save it for the next year.

Setukas In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-24 21:28:10 +0000 UTC]

Well you can use different teas, dried rose leaves for some colours, different green leaves... coffee or black tea crumbs for tiny spots...

And if you want to give it more tone, then Hypericum perforatum will give a nice red. (By the way, in Estonia it´s called naistepuna or neitsipuna = women´s blood or virgin blood) I have no idea if you have any of it where you live though... It makes a nice tea, too

And woollen yarn is good - coloured yarn for colourful stripes and white or flaxen for white stripes.

Actually you can put just about anything in and the results are never the same, just try out stuff!

Oh, and a trick for when the onion skins refuse to stay in place - make the fabric wet, they stick on then!

Oh my that's quite interesting. Must start collecting in time next year.

Oh and I remembered some other stuff too!
You can use green moss to get a nice green (but I don´t know if lichen works, I haven´t tried.)
And blackberries! I bet you have an idea of what´s going to be the result...
And Potentia erecta root has a pretty nice red colour.

Oh, and if you don´t want some of the eggs to have the onion skin pattern, you can put them in without the skins (but you can add other stuff). They still get the colour, but it´s even and different leaves and such look better on them.

I have some pictures but I´m too lazy to put them up right now...

Sweet-Nymph In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-23 19:56:49 +0000 UTC]

Just so we're clear, you just start with RAW eggs, the skin or whatever from onions and rice, then boil them to make them the hard boiled eggs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Winehorse In reply to Sweet-Nymph [2008-03-23 20:14:44 +0000 UTC]

Uhm.. yeah: you buy the eggs in the shop, wrap the onionskins around them (can be rather tricy at the times) and do all the other stuff that's in the tut.. and then you boil them like you usually boil the eggs.

We've used the egg skins too, but never with rice. I'm definitely going to try this method out next year.
Thanks dear!

Thanks and yw ! Well, the rice can act surprisengly.. sometimes it gives cool white spots here and there and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Anyways.. a surprise.

I just have one suggestion about the cloth:my uses old, thin pantyhose to wrap the eggs.U just wrap the eggs in onions and then put them in the pantyhose and twist them.In the end u should have something like egg sausages

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Winehorse In reply to Panthera89kg [2008-03-23 18:22:48 +0000 UTC]

That seems to be really handy method too. (Only, i think we have more old shirts than pantys to be boiled.) Thanks !

Panthera89kg In reply to Winehorse [2008-03-23 23:23:03 +0000 UTC]

Sorry,I meant on stockings and pantys made of nylon. They r easier to come by

Palju õnne.
Just. Ometi said ka jänkid teada, kuidas eestlased seda teevad.
Mina teen kaa. Ainult et ribade asemel kasutan nelinurkseid tükke, sest neid saab muna ümber ümbrikuks voltida, ja siis niidiga kinni.
(Ja riidevärve kasutan kah. Komme, mille korjasime perega vanaemalt.)
