Description Greetings one and all! Wings here to teach you how to ink like a pro!

…Okay, maybe that’s going a little far, but I can give you some hints to improve your ink work, starting with line weight! All the important hints to weighting lines are above, but you also need to keep some stuff in mind as far as tools of the trade go, not to mention the inker lingo that may otherwise go over your head…

Pencil- (You don’t want to ink on #2 pencil lead, since it’ll get into your ink and kill your pen faster. Instead what I do is draw everything up with a #2 pencil, then transfer it all to the good paper with a lighter pencil. Try using 2H, 4H or other softer leads.)

Eraser- (I know this is kinda stupid for me to put up here, but my teacher would slaughter me if she found out I was doing this and didn’t think to include this part. Magic Rubs are a good brand to use, as far as erasers go. Also, try and find a good kneaded eraser to help get rid of lead dust when you’re done.)

Pen- (Duh! This one should be kinda obvious right off the bat. Still, any old pen won’t do. The best known brand of pens to use is a Micron, anywhere between .05 and .005. Still, if you find another brand you like, then feel free to use that instead. I happen to prefer Millennium, since they’re cheaper and better quality IMO. Not to mention the fact that they’re easier for me to get my hands on…)

Fill Pen- (This is just a fancy name for the larger black marker/pen you use to fill in all the areas that are pure black. A black sharpie is good for this, and a brand-new brush pen works fine, too. If you need to, though, even just a regular black marker will do fine for a fill pen.)

Light Source- (Pretty point-blank here, this is something that’s giving off a light. Usually the sun, but there can also be a non-traditional light source, such as energy, or fire or such.)

Trapping- (Trapping is what you call it when someone outlines a picture without thinking, something you want to avoid since you cannot go in and add technique to trapped lines.)

millennium .05?

I like that size, since the thinner sizes makes it easier to make thin, smooth lines, but it's best to experiment with the sizes and see what suits you best. Also, it's smart to find fill pens as well, like sharpies or brush pens that need to be faded down.

Millenium's one of my favorite brands, but Microns are pretty reliable too.

Yeah, that's them. Though I'm rather confused about the fact that there's no black there... o.0;;;

There aren't any. You're better off buying a micron or millenium pen and some white out for mistakes.

Wow, that really goes a long way towards making the picture look professional. Does it get easier as you get used to it? Does inking take a long time to do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WingsofMorphius In reply to Donteatacowman [2009-12-27 02:55:38 +0000 UTC]

yes, inking gets much easier as you do it, and you improve a lot very quickly. Depending on what you're used to, inking doesn't take long. This picture took me less then an hour, but bigger ones with backgrounds and such take longer.

WingsofMorphius In reply to dreama-draws [2007-06-20 17:00:56 +0000 UTC]

No prob. ^^ Line weight actually becomes easier as you go on, but the main problem is making sure you have someone to reiveiw you works for mistakes, so you don't get into the habit of doing something wrong over and over again.

A teacher would be nice... just some one who's developed an eye for inking, and can tell you where you need to improve.

So the linewieght isn't random.... *too ignorant for her own good* Maybe I should start practicing with my pencils or something until I gather up enough confidence to actually use a pen... XDD (One reason why I use digital media more than traditional ones even though I'm a lot less comfortable w/ them is becaue I can always undo when I mess up. Inking? Undo? What am I supposed to do, use a whiteout? XDD)

WingsofMorphius In reply to StarsOfTwilight43 [2007-06-09 01:12:04 +0000 UTC]

^^ In inking if you mess up, you can always try and turn it into something new... I've done that more then once

really cool tutorial, but I kind of want to point out, and please don't hate me for this, that HB and #2 pencil lead are the exact same- seriously, check out a #2 pencil for yourself if you don't believe me. Just thought you might like to know. Later.

Watchful-seraphim In reply to WingsofMorphius [2006-08-20 22:12:33 +0000 UTC]

It's okay, probably got drilled into your head through years of standardized testing- I used a mechanical pencil more than once just to annoy the teachers, I also ignored them when they complained . No, I wasn't much of a brat while I was in school, I just enjoyed irritating the teachers by proving them wrong.

Might I share? A ballpoint pen works well too, surprisingly. I tried it once, and so did a friend of mine, We were shocked that it actually had nice results for inking

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WingsofMorphius In reply to tatsunotoshi [2006-08-13 13:57:21 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but ballpoints usually take longer to dry, so if you accidentally slip up, you end up with an ink smear on the picture. That's why I stick to needlepoints. Still, whatever works for you...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tatsunotoshi In reply to WingsofMorphius [2006-08-14 06:59:22 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the brand, I guess. 'cause the brand we have dries quickly. I use needlepoints too, of course, but I find it fun to try inking with ballpoints

Nice work here. One thing I keep forgetting with my stuff is the Light sorce. I feel really stupid saying that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WingsofMorphius In reply to ToniPendragon [2006-08-04 20:26:21 +0000 UTC]

If you need to, draw it in with pencil at first. After a while, though, it'll become more natural and you won't need it. Don't be ashamed of that, I never thought about it, either, until I was taught the professional way of inking. Now it's second nature for me.
