Okay so in my head cannon this is the prototype for procedural saucer separation and re-integration. Built out of the scraps in Federation boneyards as a cost cutting measure the Mary Read Class was put together solely to prove that the computer systems of the time could handle the complex maneuvers required for the docking of the primary and secondary hulls. Later the ship was refitted into a versatile heavy cruiser during the Dominion War where she was used in hit and run tactics as a Federation privateer. The Mary Read is the only ship of her class.
