Description
Hey, Vectorinos, it’s time for a little trip to the Great White North. To be honest, Skippy the Undead Intern got really excited about Canada while researching Wolverine online so now we gotta do THIS. So let’s dig into the predominan Canuck superhero team: ALPHA FLIGHT!
Meet James McDonald Hudson, the founder of the Alpha Flight team. A brilliant engineer who created a high-tech, skintight powered exosuit, Hudson was appalled to find out his creation was being sold by his company to the US Military. He envisioned a tool for exploration or rescue…not a weapon. Absconding with his creation, James eventually met with the Canadian government (a meeting facilitated by his future wife, Heather McNeil) and they formed a special projects unit named Department H. Which sounds like a 3rd rate hardware store chain, but in actuality became a secretive agency that monitored and managed superhuman activities in the country. So kind of a polite version of S.H.I.E.L.D., eh.
Inspired by the American superhero team the Fantastic Four, Hudson decided Canada needed its own super team, funded by Department H. Recruiting powered individuals to form this team, he found a the amnesiac, clawed powerhouse that would one day become the X-Man Wolverine. Logan was originally meant to be the team’s leader, but after getting headhunted by Professor X, that never happened. Which left Hudson a bit miffed.
James developed his suit into a colorful supersuit that gave him supersonic flight, a powerful forcefield, energy blasts, and other super abilities. Adding a Canadian flag motif, he became the heroic Weapon Alpha. Soon after he changed his name to Vindicator. And soon after that, to Guardian. Ask Hank Pym…picking the right hero name your first go can be tough.
After assembling Alpha Flight for the government (and later taking that team private), Guardian seemingly lost his life in battle, leaving his new team to carry on in his stead.
Turns out, though, he just got teleported into space and turned into a cyborg by weird aliens. Hey…comics are bonkers, man.
