Description So I wasn't going to do installment number three of Brothers Grimm just yet, but I added ~gorjuss to my DevWatch a couple of days ago and noticed she was having a Brothers Grimm competition, so I went ahead and did Rapunzel a little early so she could be my entry into the contest before the cut-off, which is today.

When I think of Rapunzel, here modeled after ~SirenadeStock , I always think of the traditional feminine princess archetype.... the delicate and beautiful flower locked away and shielded from the rest of the world until her handsome prince comes to rescue her and take her away toward her destiny on a white horse. Some find that idea insulting while others find it charming. It depends on how you look at it, I suppose. I always felt like Rapunzel's long hair was a symbol of not only her beauty, but beauty itself as well, so it is interesting that it becomes the means by which she eventually escapes from her tower prison. Beauty can be a means of escape on many levels when one takes the time to think about it. Also used in the creation of this piece was a castle photo from ~MirandaRose-Stock to help create Rapunzel's tower.

You are quite welcome, Sweetie. You deserve more praise than I know how to give. I hope you get noticed by the big boys here at DA.

Hee hee.... thank you! It would be nice to be more noticed by the higher-ups in DA, but I'm not sure this is really the kind of stuff they're into these days judging from the style of most of the DDs I've been seeing. It seems like they're leaning way more toward abstract stuff or photography.

A beautiful work, all the elements blend so flawlessly. Wonderful selection of background and the lighting is perfect.

Excellent artists comments. I enjoy being able to get that insight into the artists feelings. Thanks for sharing that.

You're welcome! I try to be very extensive in my comments as far as what inspired a piece, or why I chose to represent things a certain way. It's always kind of maddening to me when I see a piece I really love and then it has "..." or "" as the entire artist's statement.

this makes my Rapunzel deviation look like a five year old did it in his sleep! I really really really love what you've done here. You definately created the winning piece in this contest, in my opinion. It's a very romantic and magical piece you created here. The hair is amazing, and the model you used is quite beautiful. I love the soft subtle effect of the light shining through the window...I could go on and on doting upon this piece, but in general I really love what you've done!

Now I must see the rest of your gallery

that's sweet of you! Everyone knows that Rapunzel was known for her golden hair. I just haven't quite figured out how to make blonde hair look natural, you know? I'm still very new at this. You seem like you know your stuff quite well, though. How long have you been creating art like this? Your artwork is just *so* amazing...I can't say it enough...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wolfmorphine In reply to wingless-one [2006-02-01 05:13:28 +0000 UTC]

I haven't been doing digital art all that long.... since about this past August.... but I had been painting traditionally for many years before that, so it was really just a matter of learning the ins and outs of Photoshop. Honestly I'm still working on that.

Blonde hair is really very hard.... I agree with you. I usually hand-draw all my hair with a 2 or 1 pixel brush in about three different shades: a dark undertone, a mid-tone, and a highlight tone. With blonde hair, it's easier to just do really light brown and then lighten some of it up with your dodge tool. If I try to go for the "blonde" look right away, it just winds up looking yellow or orange.

wingless-one In reply to wolfmorphine [2006-02-01 05:34:10 +0000 UTC]

I understand completely what you're saying about the blonde hair. You know it's really funny, I've been working with photoshop for exactly the same time that you have. If you look, we've literally signed up for dA within a few days of eachother! Isn't that amazing? I think what sets you apart from is is that you've been painting traditionally. So you already had many skills developed when it came to things like scale, lighting, shading, etc. etc. It's very impressive, if you ask me. Do you have any traditional art that you could scan and submit here on dA? I'd really love to see what you can do outside of photoshop...

wolfmorphine In reply to wingless-one [2006-02-01 18:28:34 +0000 UTC]

I don't have any of my traditional paintings anymore, sadly. I used to kind of have this bad habit of giving away the things I did to friends or relatives without even taking any pictures of it or anything first. They really looked a lot like my digital work does though. I tended to utilize some of the same patterns, tricks, and techniques for making things look certain ways. There are a couple of my traditional graphite drawings in my gallery though. I think they're the very first two things I uploaded. You will kind of see where the basic style is really similar.

Although I do have some photomanip elements going on in my pieces, I rely very heavily on painting and airbrushing, probably because of my background. By the time I'm done, so little is left of the original stock that I usually just upload the finished pieces to the "painting" category and settle for crediting the owners of the original stock images since I know it's under there somewhere.

wingless-one In reply to wolfmorphine [2006-02-01 22:44:52 +0000 UTC]

that makes perfectly good sense. I honestly think it's what seperates a good artist from a bad artist. I believe that stock photos should be more of a guideline, or model of what you can do. A figure to expand upon and make unique. Many artists have managed to do it quite well - like yourself. I think that's a wonderful thing

wolfmorphine In reply to wingless-one [2006-02-01 22:49:04 +0000 UTC]

I tend to agree with you, although I have seen so many gorgeous pieces on DA that are pure photomanip. I'm just not as good at that though. My stuff just doesn't feel finished to me until it's been completely painted over for the most part. Sometimes I leave backgrounds and such alone for the most part, but figures are usually completely repainted.

wingless-one In reply to wolfmorphine [2006-02-01 23:01:38 +0000 UTC]

I find myself beginning to add more to the characters themselves, like changing the colors of their clothing. I know that really isn't much, but one has to take baby steps, you know? It's all so very interesting though...the great world of photomanipulators, you know? Digital art is the next big thing in the great world of art. I wonder how long it will be before people stop painting with real paint. I'm sure that's an extreme thing that will probably never happen, but one has to wonder. I know several people on here who actually get their art printed on canvas and exhibit it in real art galleries! Now that's really amazing, if you ask me! As you have said earlier, this is just for fun...though for many people, it's their livlihood.
