Description
This is a depiction of Poppea Sabina, the infamous favorite mistress of the Roman Emperor Nero who eventually became his second wife. Poppea's power over Nero was thought to be at the root of many of the executions and exiles meted out upon countless unfortunates during his reign. However, she also died at Nero's hands, which is why I have the fiddle, representing the emperor, standing in as the cause of the bloodstains on Poppea's gown while Rome burns in the background. (Doubtless some of you have heard the legend of crazy Emperor Nero madly playing his fiddle as the city went up in flames.) I first became fascinated with the figure of Poppea after seeing a series of photographs by Erwin Olaf called "Royal Blood", depicting several dead personages of royal descent in a ghost-like, undead state. Poppea was among them, and I have been meaning to read up on her and depict her in my own way at some point in the future. A good on-line friend of mine shared my strong interest in Poppea, so while her body here is based on a stock photo of `lockstock , I painted Poppea's face to more closely resemble my friend. Also used here are the columns from ~sabrine-nature-stock and also some images from clipart.com .Related content

Amazing interpretation of the Nero and Poppea story! I love how the blood is dripping down onto her dress from the violin who is representing Nero! The idea about the fiddle is great

Thank you! It's fun to stick a little history lesson into these now and then. Haven't done that in a long time. It was due.

Those were the days, ones I would never miss.
There is a very dangerous look in her eyes,
a gaze I would not like to have reflect upon myself.
Nero must have been weak of mind or
at the will of his mistress, leaving him little will of his own.
Witches, born with a gift, a talent to weld over others.
Some may laugh and say this is foolhardy, that is,
until they fall under a spell.
Once again, nice work :bravo: (<---oh, that is not an emoticon)

Women like Poppea do give one pause, do they not? I always find myself fascinated with such figures.

If you compare the mind to a switchboard. When made and used properly, all the connections are made then communication flows in the correct order. If the connections are malaligned, there is communication yet it goes to the wrong point causing confusion. Should the person not realize this fact and not get a technician to put things in perspective, the individual assumes this is the natural order. No matter how garbled the information gets, the person operates on this mixed information. This is how they perceive the world and act accordingly. Much like 'the voices in my head' syndrome. That's crazy. Fortunately, the only voice in my head is mine. Sometimes I wonder about that one
I do not know if this analogy made any sense. I can only go with the switchboard in my head

Ha ha... thanks! And I suppose she was rather devious. Certainly questionable, at any rate.

Great pic and interesting story, although it can't 've been a fiddle, since those were invented much later after the Roman Empire's fall. Might've been a lyre or smth similar.
she looks a bit like Anna Vissi by the way.

Yeah, and in fairytale land everything is allowed. So why not giving Nero and iPod to make him happy

Sure... why not! The cool thing about art is it can be anything you want it to be... especially when you're working in symbols.
