Description
Yet another TMNT redesign. This time it's Ray Fillet, the hero of the deep.I wanted to make this character a bit more playful like the old action figures from when I was a kid. Thus the duck float and the harpoon tail. I also wanted to make him look a lot more like a superhero and snagged this pose directly from an illustration of superman. His fins just make such a convenient cape!
This will probably be the last thing I post for a bit, as I am moving to another country and starting school again. I hope you all enjoy it.

haha. I never got into him much as a kid. Something about the design seemed pretty funny to me when I was working on this though.

He was one of my favorites from the original toy line--but he was so hard to find! I know he was in the Archie comic a lot, too, but I never read those.

I THINK I had a copy of that toy, but now I can't remember for sure. There were a few silly characters that I got toward the end, and I had no idea who they were. I think Ray Fillet was one of them.Β

Probably! Β They had a crap load of weird characters in that series. Β They even made a character based on a tapeworm! Β They were really reaching for animal ideas at that point.

haha. I remember that tapeworm character. He would be fun to draw too.

I should revisit him! Β I drew a version of him about 14 years ago--he was white and looked more like an actual worm, and resembled Twelve from Street Fighter III quite a bit. Β ...as most of my characters do. He'd be fun to draw again!

Definitely! I have to get back into using Flash again though, which is a bit exhausting. I also have a Scumbug design that I have been sitting on for about two years now too.
You should definitely draw him too. I really dig your character redesign work.

Ooon, Scumbug would be cool to see! Β Do you use Flash for these designs? Β They look great!
Thanks, man! Β I'm really digging your designs, too!

Yeah. I used Flash to make all of these. It's just painful for me to do stuff in vector now though. It's so obsessive compulsive.

Ha, ha! Β Sounds like it would be. Β I never really got the hang of vector.

Thanks! That was a big part of the design for me. I wanted him to look like some sort of a Aquatic superman.

I had the action figure when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure he came with a little sidekick, which I ended up using as a player piece in the best board game of all time: DYNAMITE!

Thanks.
I don't remember the sidekick, but it was definitely during that time period where they were giving them all of those still little accessories like that.

Danke!, I loooove the colors, is that illustrator or just fancy gradient work???
π: 0 β©: 1
WonderDookie In reply to Scott-VanDusen [2011-03-09 01:37:24 +0000 UTC]
Just fancy gradient work I guess. I did this illustration in Flash, so I wasn't able to do those weird gradient alterations. To be honest I usually don't like the look of those really structured gradients.

Scott-VanDusen In reply to WonderDookie [2011-03-09 03:24:17 +0000 UTC]
Gotcha, so did you just layer chunks of color over each other?
π: 0 β©: 1
WonderDookie In reply to Scott-VanDusen [2011-03-09 06:03:46 +0000 UTC]
No. I used lines to delineate the gradient areas and then filled them in. It was sort of like cell shading but with gradients and lots of cells.

Nice redesign of an obscure TMNT character. The gills in the chest are nice, considering Manta rays gills are located there. The rubber ducky floatie is a nice comical touch to.

WonderDookie In reply to Beau-Skunk [2011-01-14 01:14:29 +0000 UTC]
Thank you much. Yeah, it sort of seemed like a missed opportunity not giving him the chest gills in the cartoon and comic. Needed to be rectified.
