The Glowfury is a species of dragon very closely related to the Night Fury. This species has a tragic history of being hunted for its power, not to mention the challenge of hunting it... and it's very possible that this was the species that was labeled as the "Nightfury" before Toothless'es non archipeligo native kind was discovered. It's also thought that Grimmel the Grisly hunted this species of Fury very close to extinction, leaving only a few remaining individuals and Glowfury hybrids behind. I was lucky enough to meet one of the last known Glowfuries- an individual named "Leafspine"- who had been captured but not killed by Grimmel and his Deathgripper pack, before Hiccup and Toothless rescued him from almost certain doom. Leafspine, much like Toothless, is capable of starting, stopping, or turning on a piece of gold, and a very fast flyer, being able to outpace all but the other Furies. He also shares most of his abilities with Toothless- with the exception of being able to generate an EMP type blast capable of causing fatal electrocution to even large dragons, and being able to control the amount of power behind his lightning blasts instead of his plasma blasts. It's thought that Glowfuries can blast lightning from hatching, but are unable to blast plasma blasts until their teenage years or even until they reach maturity. It's also thought that Glowfuries may have interbred with both Night and Light Furies in the past, as evidenced by all three species having very similar abilities and very similar appearances to each other... not to mention (usually fully grown) hybrid individuals have been observed in Night and Lightfury flocks. Whereas Nightfuries are colored to camouflage with the night sky, and Lightfuries are colored to camouflage with light mist and the horizon, Glowfuries appear to be naturally colored to camouflage with various types of cloud, especially storm clouds. it's also thought that when Glowfuries were more numerous, they would hang around stormclouds to easily recharge their electricity stores, competing with the Skrill for lightning. In the absence of the Glowfury flocks, Nightfury flocks have begun to move in and colonize the barbaric archipeligo, with Toothless'es flock likely being among the first true Nightfury flocks to colonize the archipeligo. Due to their long and sad history with ruthless human hunters, the few remaining Glowfuries are very cautious and skeptical of humans, and the more aggressive Glowfuries have adopted a "kill on sight" attitude towards humans.
