Description
A couple of refined currawongs are interrupted by the neighbour from hell.(For those of you unfamiliar with either species of bird, currawongs have a gentle, subtle and lovely call, while cockatoos mostly go 'RAAAAAAAAWK' at an indecent volume whenever they can)
Watercolour on cotton.

This can only end badly... (And judging by the sounds in the tree next to my bedroom window...It can also only end in my backyard at five in the morning.)

Thank you! My sister pointed out these currawongs are pretty much modelled on my parents: they can't suffer a nosy neighbourhood fool!

haha this work is sweet and hilarious!
I can imagine how peaceful it was before the cockatoo came and then the currawongs were like, "Oh no, not him..."

I like to think the cockatoo has actually been leaning in for a couple of minutes before he lets rip with a RAAAAWK!, just to enjoy their exasperation that much more...

*laughs* I love the expression work... the female (?) with the wine glass just has that look on her face of 'Oh dear God, not again...'

As these may be subconsciously modelled on my parents, the one with the wine glass is my mum, yes. And that's exactly what she'd be thinking.

I just adore this, it's so funny and amazingly done! The style is so wonderful!
Always the most beautiful birds have the most terrible sounds, I guess

Thank you. I do struggle with trying to preserve the 'animalness' in my anthropomorphizing.

Hahaha....my friend told me that as much as I loved the cockatoos and kookaburras when I was visiting Australia, if I had to be woken up by one or the other EVERY.SINGLE.MORNING I wouldn't like either anymore. This picture just made me think of how much he hated the cockatoos in particular XD
Awesome work.

Hehehe, yeah, that's pretty much how I think of cockatoos. They are a gorgeous looking bird, but so LOUD! (and incredibly ungainly - watching them try to land on a branch is hilarious as they often end up upside-down!).

CrystalEnceladus In reply to wovenlines [2012-04-11 08:21:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, one use to make a racket outside our window when I was a teen as if to say, "RAH! I'M HERE, WAKE UP, GIMMIE SOME ATTENTION!"
'Go 'way, it's the weekend!'
Never found out what became of it. Now, these days, wild cockatoos are normal in Melbourne, along with pink galahs and parrots in general, thanks to droughts and global warming.
Oh, yeah, watching them land. Galahs do it, too, too many on one branch clambering over each other, it droops and they go flapping everywhere. It's funny to watch for sure.

I was walking in the bush with a friend a while ago and we saw a group of black cockatoos. They were really beautiful, and I've never been that close to them before, but boy were they ungainly! We crept up quietly to watch without disturbing them but we really shouldn't have bothered: they're so much bigger than sulphur-crested and in the confined bush they were just wings and talons everywhere, toppling over, smacking into branches and careening about madly.
I'm lucky to be in a nice leafy area of Sydney, so we get all sorts including king parrots, kookaburras, cockatoos, currawongs, herons and lorikeets. I love them all, although I could probably live the rest of my life happily without hearing another native noisy miner! The incessant peeping!

Black ones! I nae seen any except at the zoo! You must have gotten a laugh out of the poor klutzes. It's amazing they don't wreak their feathers.
We get currawongs, too, or I think they are. They nest on the roof above my room whenever I visit my mother in the summer, and they do make a racket when they're having a conference with others on the veranda where the cockatoo used to pester us. They dive at the cats, but the cats just ignore them.
In Korea, you're lucky if you hear or see any birds at all, but since I live near the DMZ, there are pretty starlings and robins with a lovely warble, and the occasional heron or flock of geese.

One of the funniest (but also slightly sad) things I've ever seen was my mum's cat, who was quite elderly, being fed outside at their rural property: a pair of very cheeky kookaburras swooped down, landed next to her and literally muscled her out of the way. The cat meowed a few times, realised she couldn't take these huge, aggressive birds and shuffled off to wait until they'd eaten their fill!
These same kookaburras stole peanut butter toast out of my hand, so I can sympathise with the cat. They're so naughty!

Oh, dear me. Poor cat! I bet she got fed indoors after that! I had a baboon steal my sandwich, but never a bird! A crow did slam into my head one day, trying to steal my sunnies. It's amazing it didn't scratch my eyes out.
