Description If you're tired of seeing crystal concepts I did while working on The Crystal Core  from Bitloft then you're in luck, because this is the last crystal-related image I have that's worth uploading, it's all character stuff from here. Though if you aren't looking at these as I post them, but instead going through my gallery from newer works to older works, then you're past characters and this will be the first Knowledge Crystal concept image you see. Which, as an aside, is a matter that leaves me perpetually unsure as to which order is best to post images with a preferred viewing order - the order that makes sense for those viewing them as they're uploaded, or the order that those wandering by later would most likely go by. Personally, it seems like I view far more images in the latter "reverse" fashion than in the order they were uploaded, but it still seems weird to post them that way so here we are. And once again I'm way off topic as usual.

Back on the matter of the image itself, these are the final round of Knowledge Crystal concepts I produced in my time working on The Crystal Core. Compared to previous concepts, this last round reflected a change in focus to the more familiar crystalline forms you see here, as opposed to the wackier earlier concepts. Still, these weren't necessarily supposed to read as real crystals, which meant that I could have fun with the colors and markings, which I very much did. In fact, I had progressively more fun with the colors as I went, as you can see from the progression from plain single colors at the top to more and more elaborate combinations and markings on the bottom. Was the top row too bland? The last row too weird? I don't know, this was one of my last submissions for the project. What I do know is that trying out a range of ideas is what the concept stage is for, so that's what I did.

Hi! This is quite honestly the first deviation I've ever observed from you, fellow deviant,
and I must say: I find all of these conceptualized crystal gems fascinating to look at.
My absolute favourites have to be crystals 4F, 4E, 4C, 3A, 3B, 2F, 2D, 2E, 1F and 1E. (Crystals 4B and 4D look pretty neat too.)
Also, I'm already imagining what all sorts of magic, elemental essence, or piezoelectricity might be stored within these crystals.
Neat and inspirational work! This deviation is totally 'd!

I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed these crystals so much! Actually, I was surprised by how much interest this image got in general for that matter. Seems people like pretty colorful crystals more than I realized.

In any case, sounds like you enjoyed a lot of them, thought I find your interest in the E variations particularly interesting since you singled out three of them. Didn't seem like that was a very popular shape overall. Care to share why E's form spoke to you as much as it did?

Incidentally, the secret of what they contain is... information. They are futuristic data storage representations. Which is why the designs were all over the place, who knows what a data crystal would or could look like?

You're welcome!

Right. Well, the E variant appears to be the most natural in form due to its more rounder edges, looking more unpolished and raw than the others.
I have always enjoyed geometric shapes such as triangles and rhombuses as a kid but now that I'm an adult I find rounder shapes more appealing than before.

Information, eyh? If only we had memory sticks like that for computers.
Thanks for the response!

It wasn't meant to be a tutorial, but if it works for those purposes too, then I'm glad to help.

As much as I hate to admit it, if this is a reference to something, I... don't get it.

Okay, so you were talking about ponies then, got it... I think. It initially occurred to me that "Essences of Virtue" could be a synonym for "Elements of Harmony," and it made sense in conjunction with the collection of pretty colors and symbols, but the "the doctor" part threw me off that line of thinking. And to be honest, it's still confusing me. Is it a Doctor Who thing?

Explaining a joke may kill it, but it's still better than being totally lost. Thanks for walking me though that particular pop culture knowledge gap.

Everybody loves crystals! They're so shiny and pretty and potentially magical. Though judging by your avatar there, I'd guess you like emeralds most of all.

Ok, imma point out that B-2's colour scheme is very like the UI from Heroes from the storm.
I mean the mix of blue and purple is fairly obvious if you played the game.
Either I'm over-analysing it, or I'm completely stupid.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WridianGrey In reply to XxGirlyAngelxX [2018-06-17 11:46:36 +0000 UTC]

Seeing as how I've never played Heroes of the Storm before and only saw my first gameplay just now to check on the similarity, I plead innocence on the grounds of ignorance and random chance. There's only so many colors in the visible spectrum so odds are eventually people are going to pick similar combinations by sheer chance.

With that said though, unless I'm looking at something different than you're thinking of, I'd say the colors aren't quite the same. I'm seeing a purple and indigo sort of color scheme there, whereas B2 is purple and green. Still, both are dealing with primarily a base of dark purple with smaller hints of a brighter neighboring color, so I can see the similarity overall, even if the specific highlight hues are different.

Would it be ok to use this for shading reference? I've been fussing with a character with crystal for hair.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WridianGrey In reply to Epic-Snowman [2018-06-17 11:35:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, go ahead. The specific designs belong to the studio but I doubt rights to a specific coloring technique are really a concern. So if it helps to use these as a coloring/shading reference, that should be no problem.

I don't actually know that. I was working on it pretty early in development when a lot of things were still being figured out. It should probably be more clear as it gets closer to release.

Thanks for asking, but unfortunately, it's not my permission to give. These concepts were contract work where, as usual, everything produced belongs to the studio I was working for. I had to get permission to even post these at all.

A fellow fan of the crazier colors too, huh? 4D is a mess of practically every color, but weirdly enough it works like that, huh? Personally, I liked 4B best from that row though. It ended up looking like it was glowing with some kind of radioactive power!

Ooooooooh so pretty is there a relation between all of the gemstones in one row?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WridianGrey In reply to J3susChr1st [2018-06-17 11:12:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. There's a little bit of relation in that row 1 is all single colors and row 2 is all row 1's crystals but with internal light beams. But rows 3 and 4 are all whatever I could think of with no particular theme. Just throwing out ideas to see if they caught on.

WridianGrey In reply to J3susChr1st [2018-08-02 11:11:34 +0000 UTC]

That'd be a pretty long answer to really try to explain it all in depth. There were good times when the ideas were flowing and the drawings felt right or we were all just discussing ideas, stressful times when the ideas weren't happening or time was ticking away too fast, and of course, lots and lots of drawing. So basically it was like... doing freelance concept art for a game with a serious production schedule? That's probably not a very satisfying answer, but any better and I'd be writing a wall of text.
