NOTE: PLEASE READ ==> Lol. I'm flattered, but I don't have the time, patience, or fortitude to look at your OCs and tell you how to fix them. xD Just read up on the tutorial and compare your OC with what we're saying.Full view to really be able to read it. VERY TEXT HEAVY.
A collaborative effort between myself and my good friend *Goldenkitsune-Queen
This here, boys and girls, is how to make a decent, My Little Pony OC, while keeping away from the things that make them total Marysues. We see far too many examples of just plain BAD characters, and so, we made this. Use the information here as a sort of guideline when creating your OC.
I know it's very text heavy, but the info is good and something to really keep in mind when making your OC.
I did most of the writing, with a few pointers and much help from *Goldenkitsune-Queen and a few others in the group I run.
*Goldenkitsune-Queen is responsible for the wonderful illustrations and, again, a big help on the text based content as well.

lol the 2 speech bubbles with blackstorm and grapeford! i completely agree. i hate when i see an OC with impossible powers and a past so complicated, dark and tragic it's impossible not to laugh at. Plus all of their annoying accessories like noserings and eye patches. and the colors you will see on one of these evil ponies are almost always the same: a black coat with bloodred spiky hair, dragon eyes, scars and blood all over their body.

Normal and Quirky are not very good examples. You either overshoot the personality or underlie the transparency of your OC.

Nice! It really helped with my OC. She is a brown and light pink unicorn (So she can use everything in her shop properly with magic without crushing anything) and makes chocolate and bubblegum. Does she sound good?

I've been trying to make a ponysona/OC for a LONG time now, and I just can't do it. I have a horrible time picking/deciding on a design and colors. Also, mine doesn't have a cutie mark. I'm not trying to make my OC weird or mysterious- it's to symbolize that I'm a little confused in my life and I don't know my "place" and I haven't really found out who I am yet.

This is a very good thing to make. With the Brony fandom getting larger by the day, more and more people want their OC to stand out, but really it makes me want to Some people give their ponies Cutie Marks but dont even know what their talent is. It's sad. But, a good point to make is that you don't want your pony's talent/CM too simple. Like, a skateboard... Are they fast? Do they do tricks? What exactly? Of course, you also want to make your pony's talent alittle vauge and open. I personally screwed my main OC over by making her talent a little too precice. It definately is a challenge.

Fawk it, i already made a half mary sue alicorn before i even knew about alicorns. i just watched the first episode, made an alicorn not sure what to call it, and made him not perfect. Fawk.

I made a shit load of Mary-sues. They fit my stories and you know what...I love each and everyone of my Alicorn Oc's.
(not "love love". I just don't have any plans on "tweaking" my characters to said Tut...I mean You could have posted "don't give your ponies cutie marks of animals or things they love or else your a "mary sue"")
What makes you so cool to give Yes and No,without knowing the grey area of peoples stories/character history?
I've got 3 stories with Alicorns(1 OC alicorn) and my Beta readers haven't egg shelled me yet.

Wow. Even knowing a canon character can turn your pony into a Sue? Hah! It's stated a bunch of times that Pinkie Pie knows everypony in Ponyville, so if your pony lives in Ponyville I guess it's a Sue.

Before i found that alicorns are kinda may sue i made my OC a alicorn, because regardless MLP, alicorns are one of my favorite mytical creatures; but besides that and after i read this im happy she's not a Sue, just a boring alicorn i just wanted her to be normal, boring and kinda bitchy xD I never drew her lol, but im gonna maybe change some things about her after reading this because some things make no sense now i think about them, great stuff ^^

Hm...so would it be okay to say that my OC is just crazy enough to be a pyromaniac, due to the fact her father was a dragon, and her cutie mark a blue flame? I want her to have magic from her unicorn mother...but just enough so that she can look like a pony and able to control fire-related objects. That too Mary Sue-ish?

i have a alicorn oc, but she keeps it real. this is how she would introduce herself: Hi, my name is morning flourish. Im blind,my special talent is moving sunbeams. They are the only thing i can see.

It's mainly a suggestion with good reason behind it. Not everybody has to follow it if it's a good character otherwise.

I know this is a bit late, but thanks a bunch; your guide really helped me flesh out my OC and I'm using what I learned to help create a second character soon. If you could, can you take a look at my OC and tell me what needs to be fixed/improved? (For example, I'm trying to figure out a better body color. I'm starting to think it's a little TOO bold with the mane.)

I agree for some part but can I ask why having strips make it a sue? I mean since they DO have zebras in the show and some characters that have there parents shown like pinkie and twilight,look almost nothing like them. This with the fact that horse+zebras can have offspring,heres a video of a zorse [link]
What I'm saying is with all this is if the back ground was that your character had a red pony dad and zebra for a mom,would it make them a sue even it there are others like it around. The offspring in question could be white pony with red strips.

I Think it's more the obnoxious color scheme. If your pony was a zebra then stripes would be fine (or had some pony/zebra ancestors)

Hi I helped make this once upon a time ago. That part is not saying stripes are bad, but horrible color combinations and haphazard markings are. If you can make the color scheme and stripes or whatever work then obviously it'll be fine.
