Description Hi pplz! Here's the GIMP tut I've been promising! This one is a look at all 33 of the tools available in the GIMP's interface The next tut will be on how to make super lazy lineart, and directly following that, a coloring tutorial specific to people who are used to coloring in MS Paint and are not familiar to working with layers (basically kind of like cell shading )

I don't really understand the foreground tool. What is that used for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to NAN-EE [2011-01-14 03:39:31 +0000 UTC]

u use it to do more precise selections of areas (namely the forground) by drawing the selection area and then identifying the specific areas that you want out of that selection

awesome reference for those new to gimp. i see though only did the preset tools, and not the colour tools.

thanks! i did only the preset tools because these are the ones that new users get tripped up on and don't know how to use plus, i consider that a submenu, and i'll be doing a tutorial on each tool's "submenu" eventually lol

Ah! Thank you! I just started in gimp and only use whatever tutorials say to use and haven't played around at all. Will definitely be referring to this when I get the nerve to start working on graphics.

Amazing tutorials I picked up Gimp as a tryout (I use Photoshop CS3 normally) so this really helped me out to get used to the program fast When I first opened it up I was like "WTF is this thing?!" Very well written and easy to follow Thank you :3

you're welcome yeah i noticed that people who are used to using illustrator and photoshop can more easily catch on to the gimp once the tools are explained

DeathSinger In reply to Xadrea [2010-06-28 10:39:48 +0000 UTC]

Well the basics are the same in all art programs so guess because of that (: The user panel on the other hand...uhh...different story

i do all my work in gimp, and i've recently been watching streams of artists who use different programs. they select an area and then rotate it, or scale it. this says you can do that with gimp, but i can't figure out how.

JAMsEye In reply to AlliNix [2010-06-26 11:12:40 +0000 UTC]

The rotate tool [15.] is what you're looking for. Select an area using any selection tool then use the rotate tool. The scale tool is [16.] BTW. It allows you to scale an area or a layer by dragging borders or corners.

AlliNix In reply to JAMsEye [2010-06-26 19:35:50 +0000 UTC]

i haven't tried it with the rotate tool, but i've tried selecting and then scaling, and selecting and then moving. i don't know what i'm doing wrong, but it refuses to scale/move only the selection. i suppose i'll just keep trying.

Xadrea In reply to AlliNix [2010-06-26 23:13:05 +0000 UTC]

Your image file type may be to blame (.bmp files act funny in the GIMP) or, you are working on the wrong layer. Make sure you are on the layer you want to scale/rotate.

AlliNix In reply to Xadrea [2010-06-27 00:58:45 +0000 UTC]

i'll double check how i tried it and make sure. thanks ^_^

JAMsEye In reply to AlliNix [2010-06-26 22:11:01 +0000 UTC]

When you first make a selection then select, say, the rotate tool, you have to click the selection first, if I'm not mistaken. Then you'll see kind of a target symbol in the centre of the selection. That's where you rotate it.

Or tell your version of Gimp. Currently the latest stable version is 2.6.8. Any higher version is in development.
