Description This is my first animation that's good enough to be posted. It showcases some of the potential of Blender's fur/hair system. Each and every simulated hair exists in 3D space as any other geometry and can be freely viewed at any angle. While in still images similar look can be achieved with post-processing or some tricks with textures, these methods are less suited for animations - and this is where the power of the fur system really shows.

This animation is actually quite simple. Especially the shading has been simplified to keep the rendering times as low as possible (these were still quite high due to the large amounts of simulated fur). Many advanced techniques available in Blender haven't been used here as they would cause the rendering times to explode. Some examples are: accurate "per hair" real-time shading, fur physics simulation, ambient occlusion (special kind of shading that simulates light diffused/absorbed in the environment), higher level of anti-aliasing. I will need at least an eight-threaded processor to properly run all of these...

Some tech stats:
- Length: 6 seconds, 150 frames at 25 fps.
- Rendering: roughly 8 hours, 3 minutes per frame. Processor: Pentium Dual Core 2.5 GHz. Rendered on a frame-by-frame basis (not whole animation at once), using the times when the PC is being left idle for a while, or uses only part of its processing power, such as surfing the Web.
- Geometry: 140320 polys, 1207998 hair strands.
- Software used: Blender3D v2.49b and Pazera Free Video to Flash Converter v1.1.

All contents are my original work.

Very nice, may I ask for a link to the video to flash converter?

Of course, here you go:
[link]

This site has a lot more of different free converters available, just click "Products" and see.

The program probably installs in Polish initially but just launch it, click the button labeled "Opcje" and you'll have an option to switch it to English.

For best results, set the converter to highest bitrate available and use the 2-pass encoding.

Great work!
The fur looks awesome and the wolf is really cute!

Thanks!

Yes, it would seem like the fur simulator is going to become my specialty of sorts.
And it's quite unexpected how people love this critter. If I knew it right from the start, I'd make the wolf even better, because it was rather "side project" at the time of making (see here: [link] ).

For a "side project" its really nice!
I hope i can see other fur renders from you soon.

Sure thing! Currently, I'm getting close to completing something like this: [link]
And the wolf may find some more use as well. Actually, I have many more ideas for pictures than time to work on them.

Interesting picture.
But i like the real looking fur more. The colors are nice... but the real fur is better.

...sorta "Frankenstein syndrome" (or maybe The Island of Doctor Moreau?) - but this time in 3D!

Sounds very nice and interesting.
I'm curious about it.

Fine. In fact, some of my concepts are completely otherworldly (like those human-animal hybrids or neon-colored demon dogs ), and some are completely realistic (like this wolf, maybe some "normal" hyenas in the future?). However, as it's impossible to work on everything at once, and when time is limited, the more fantastic ideas take prevalence.

Well, both have their uses...
I wanted to try some "mad colors" this time. Actually, it's easy to see that most of my ideas are rather crazy. And frankly, I prefer to design creatures that can never be, rather than directly copy from nature.

That fur is all natural I would like to dig my paws in it and fondle

That's right, when I first figured out how to make realistic fur in Blender, I myself was amazed at the results! It surely makes one wanna reach out and pet the creature.
Making a fur like that is quite long and work-consuming, but well worth the effort. It doesn't look very interesting at the editing phase. However when I hit the right settings and render, the outcome may be a surprise even to me. To see what I mean, check here:

The guy who programmed all these goodies into Blender is a genius, I definitely owe him one!

By the way, thanks for the fave.

I should learn to use the Blender.. It seems a very thankful thing to do

OK, if you'll have any questions related with 3D, just ask.

However, I have to tell you that at times it is very hard to make Blender produce what you want, especially when it comes to the fur editor. The amount of work it requires to
get a model like this is simply insane. I suppose that if I could draw things properly, then I would just do that and never bother with 3D contraptions that are as "simple" to
use as a space shuttle. But I can't.

And here we get to the point of it all: not being able to draw well enough (except loose design sketches), I turned to 3D. I have lots and lots of ideas (some anthro-related,
some not), but somehow never been able to put them on paper. Initially I didn't have much hope of modeling anything besides simple airplanes, tanks and such (natural for me, as I have some experience with building cardboard models of
military stuff). And then, much to my surprise, I discovered that making "organic" models in Blender is no more difficult than "mechanical" ones. Later, the Blender Foundation
released the version with advanced hair editor. This opened a whole new world of possibilities, including bringing the 3D animals, both normal and anthro, to another
level of realism, and just I took my chance here.

Interestingly, this area seems to be largely unexplored, probably because of the complication of the tools associated with the fur systems and the amount of work that is required. Maybe also because the mainstream anthro art is naturally hand-drawn and people aren't accustomed to such completely different approach like the one I use. And I think that commercialisation may play its part, as it may be that the 3D modelers who are into anthros prefer to make Second Life avatars or commisions. Of course these have to be simpler than my "inventions" - models without fur are much faster to build and render. All in all, this situation leaves me free and with lots of room to do whatever I please, which is exactly the way I like it. And all I've made until now is merely the beginning...

Yeah, it's all my own job. I make all my models, textures and whatnot by myself, unaided (except for rare special cases, and even then I try to modify the stuff). While that means much more work, it gives even more satisfaction in the end!

Check my journal if you haven't done it yet, there's some more info about this model.
