Description
All this talk about forcing children to believe in gods/God, it's a tragic thing, I agree. I feel horrible when I hear people are being forced to say what they don't believe in, just like many of you who had overzealous families that made you go to church without your consent. And I will say it's wrong to force children to engage in what they don't understand. But guys, there is nothing harmful about teaching religion to children.
"But teaching children religion slows human progress! In order to kill religion we must stop teaching it to kids!"
It does not slow so-called "progress". People who actually believe this, you have to realize that by killing off a religion, you or other people just end up creating and teaching ANOTHER one. Religion has been with us since the ANCIENT times, and no matter how much you try to be rid of it, it will always be replaced by some other dogmatic belief system, with or without gods. "But children do not need to learn from such a bloody and gorey book such as the Bible!"
I agree, many children are not ready to experience the deep contexts of the Bible, but it doesn't harm the child to give the a rated G version that they can enjoy and understand:
No blood and gore in this little beauty. Antitheists and fundemental Christians, did you really expect a kid to be able to comprehend the adult version?
"But children do not need to be brainwashed by Christian camps!"
What about atheist children camps that have been around since 1996? They do just as much preaching about how God doesn't exist, it's liable to be called "brain-washing" as well when you put them both into that sort of context. The truth is, kids want to learn and be around other kids, and camps are the perfect opportunity for that. I strongly oppose camps that act more like boot-camps in general, so I can understand the concern inside children camps very much! Parents must choose wisely and know exactly what their children are being taught about when it comes to that sort of thing, so children can avoid being put into compromising situations.
" But children are taught that being an atheist is bad! They are trapped into thinking something they may not actually believe in! "
And I don't think it's right for that to happen. Alot of that behavior does not come from the actual message of Christianity, but from the parents themselves, because of THEIR faith. If a parent is THAT intimidated by someone who lacks the faith, their own faith is liable to be weaker than they wanted, and that is a problem they need to deal with themselves instead of bringing their children into it. Having doubt is not a bad thing, it's something everyone experiences at some point, and children should/are being taught to explore their beliefs. See also fav.me/d50o69g
I could go on and on about it, but here is where I think the real issue is. Misguided parenting.

Yeah. And there are more good people than bad people in the world.

That's also true. Although it seems that it's a lot of the bad people that influence things to happen in the world.

As an atheist raised in a Catholic household, I am happy to read the first part of your description.
Even after repeatedly telling my parents that I disagree with them, they still sent me to church every fucking Sunday, sent me to P.S.R. every fucking Monday, and kept telling me to "pray for forgiveness" or to "kneel to God."
However, you lost me at the camp paragraph.
No matter the nature of the camp, it is abuse to send your child to one. I don't care what it is teaching, no child deserves to be send to one against their will I've been to many a Bible Camp in my day, and if it ever were real, it would be like hell. It didn't help me learn, I got ridiculed. My parents blamed it one me. They told me to change because children were bullying me, and the adults allowed it. With all due respect, fuck you for saying that those things are good and healthy.

I had Romn Catholicism forced on me as a kid, but I've been an athiest my whole life. I believe in teaching children both religion and atheism and letting them choose what path to take

You can't teach someone to wholly contradictory concepts without favoring one. Elsewise you're not really teaching them anything.

It's not abuse, but I find it slightly unfair. I don't think kids should be taught religion or Atheism.
I think they should just be able to decide what they want to believe, or not believe, for that matter. :/

Didn't say everyone. I used to believe in God, because I was raised on it, then I decided that the idea of God is silly. But it's okay if you believe in that, just my opinion :b Atheists can be brainwashed, too.

and disown them for not following it.

a 13 year old girl...
SOLELY for being an atheist.

Atheists teach their kids about religion too. Just think about that for a sec.

As a child, I chose to be atheist by my own will, not by being taught. I don't really give a crap about what parents teach their kids as long as they don't abuse them in the process (ex: those two fundies who put heir kid in a chicken coop).

It is logically speaking- Children cannot ascertain whether they believe in anything at extremely young ages- We should always avoid Teaching them things without a proper sound answer to them. You shouldnt make any opinion or philosophy until they have the mental tools to question it. My parents let me choose and only told me of their beliefs after I was 10 or so- and now Im an atheist.
Philosophy is too important to oour identity to pass it on too early- you risk creating bias that way that stunts the moral growth of people.
Its different for every region- but in america christianity is a bully politically. I do not believe homophobia or our race troubles would have persisted this long with this much drama if not for the american-christian.
and I personally think religion- should be presented in a world history context- and not introduced by church or family. that way you get the complete and utter honest opinion of that person without any accidental pressures to them.I personally wont tell my children of religion when theyre learning basic math or English-I wouldnt want them to feel pressured to mime My beliefs- wat for that rebelous age when they have an identity they feel confident about.

I didn't really read the description, but I think I agree with you. I personally would not force my child when I have one to follow my religion, but I certainly would teach them ABOUT it and give them a choice. Teaching kids about your religion isn't abuse.

I strongly agree with your opinion. As myself being an athiest, I don't believe in a god, but hey, I respect people who are religious, but I don't think it's right for parents to force their children into a religion, but it's not child abuse, it's just parents trying to wish the best for their kids, writhed it leading to success or insanity for the child. But I wish that even though the kid is showing signs they do not agree with said religion, I wish parents would not keep forcing said religion down their throught. But yet again, I agree that teaching religion to kids is not child abuse. As long as their not threatening, belittling, hitting, or raping the kid, it isn't child abuse.

I was raised in a Catholic school and the major number of my classmates (me included) ended up being atheists/agnostics/indiferent towards religion
There were some people who, obviously, decided by themselves to continue being religious
So stop saying that religion will brainwash you and *insert pathetic drama here* because it is not real c: and yes, it was created out of your hate for other people's religion.
And yes, we learn about evolution, science and everything which would be taught in a non-religious school.
And yes, creationism is considered as a metaphore, nothing more.
At least it is how we are taught in Europe. About America, I have nothing to say.
