Description
The 'official,' authoritative version, featuring all the units at their Blizzard-approved sizes from Insight Editions' StarCraft Field Manual!(It also features the few multiplayer units that were omitted from the book, so it's like 98% official. We never discussed an official size for the Liberator while working on the book, for example, because it hadn't been created yet.)
Downloading the full size, 5200x9325 image is necessary!
If you are interested, here is a short interview Blizzard did with me about the charts and my involvement with StarCraft art in general. These images were also on display at BlizzCon 2015, which was an honor.
The version in the book itself had the formatting and a bit of color correction done by Insight Editions. As you can see from all the different units' shapes and the fact that each race's units take up a different amount of space, formatting this for book pages is quite tricky. Here you can zoom in and get a much better look at the artwork, and there's a lot less empty space than some of my early online versions. And you can see that the art is much more polished than in previous versions. I hope you all enjoy!
(If you are wondering, "What happened to all of the extra units from the single player campaigns, or the retro Brood War designs? I remember there being more," I'm splitting the chart up into two versions. This one has the Blizzard-official sizes and much more polished artwork from the Field Manual, but I still plan to have another version with all the hero units like the Odin added in. It just won't be all Blizzard approved stuff.)

The behemoth is not there ;(
...though I think I had a conversation with a blizzard artist in which he kinda confirmed that the cinematic one is the new behemoth, and that the leviathan didn't get a cinematic model due to time constraints or something...

Yeah, I'm on board with the cinematic/Hyperion design being the behemoth, the in-game unit being the Minotaur, and the SC1 design being retconned out of existence. This is how I imagine it for the chart , and how I'll scale any 3d models I make, it's just not 100% official since the book didn't specify. So the official version is just labelled "battlecruiser" without the class.
I don't know if you've seen the Field Manual, but it includes an illustration of the in-game unit Β with added detail.

From what I can see, anything larger than a hydralisk or queen could only hitch a ride on an overlord by hanging onto one of its legs.

I definitely get what you're saying, but I have a couple possible explanationsβ one is that maybe overlords with the ventral sacs upgrade can be instructed by their Brood Mothers to grow to a bigger size if they're intended to be used for carrying Swarm Hosts or something. Also, the ventral sacs might be very expandable, and maybe when they're carrying a lot their stomachs bulge down between the legs a bit.
Don't think Ultralisks would ever fit inside though, those would have to be carried underneath in the legs of a super-buff Overlord, hah.

Well the problem with a Colossus stomping over a thor is they have VERY heavy armor and colossus have very thin legs, and their armor plates are exchangeable to fight different things like energy beams from the colossus.

Back then, you differentiated the Minotaur-class from the Behemoth-class, with the latter being significantly larger than the former.Β Is this no longer the case?

xiaorobear In reply to 308Winchester [2015-12-06 22:26:16 +0000 UTC]
The short answer is, maybe, maybe not.
Basically, they were only interested in having one battlecruiser on the chart, just as the battlecruiser illustration in the main part of the book is just titled "Battlecruiser" Β (though the description on the page does mention the leviathan, behemoth, minotaur, and gorgon classes). So we just went with my drawing of the cinematic design, and when they signed off on this size we didn't discuss or specify what class it is, or if all the classes are pretty much that same size or not.
So, I have no answer. Maybe the Lore team does, but you'll have to ask them.
In my unofficial chart with all the different variations, I'll go back to including it though. At that same old size it looks like this . But, again, unofficial!

How much of your own original scaling was changed?Β Did Blizzard keep most of it, or was most of it changed by Blizzard?
π: 0 β©: 1
xiaorobear In reply to 308Winchester [2015-12-08 01:52:35 +0000 UTC]
I would say most of it was kept the same (though I had changed some things myself since the Heart of the Swarm version up on here), but lots was also changed. Protoss got a little shorter, Protoss capital ships all got a little bigger, they told me some Zerg units were a little bigger (swarm host, brood lord, hydralisk, queen). Terran probably changed the least overall, though the science vessel and valkyrie got smaller, and the cinematic battlecruiser design got to be around 980m. I don't remember every single change off the top of my head.

Im glad to know you got noticed by Blizzard for your massive work. Nobody else could have done it better.
Are you able to tell us what modifications Blizzard wanted to your old designs? I can't tell at sight

There's a long list of little changes, but the biggest updates were completely redoing my old Arbiter, Void Ray and Carrier drawings, since there are new models in the LotV campaign. They also asked me to draw a design of the Valkyrie that had been done for SC2, but never made it into a final game (though they also approved lots of SC1 designs, like the Reaver and Science Vessel, which is fun.) They asked me to fix up the Oracle because the old one's proportions were way off (good call!). They asked for the archon to get a more visible solid, armored body, since it was hard to tell what was going on in the old one, especially when printed at a tiny size. Other changes were more minor.
Then a lot of the art I just updated myself before they had a chance to ask me, like, the Overlord, Defiler and Medic have new, more SC2-like drawings because I knew the old ones weren't up to the same standard as the others, and I improved the proportions of others like the Medivac.Β Then they also gave input on a bunch of the sizes, very helpful.

Beautiful stuff! I love the Valk and Defiler designs.Β
Do you have a full colored image of the Spear of Adun, or is it just a silhouette? And will the LotV units that are almost-recolors of other units (cf. the Wrathwalker and the Colossus) show up in this second chart of yours?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
xiaorobear In reply to RvBOMally [2015-11-30 03:33:22 +0000 UTC]
Due to time and size constraints I only ever did the front 1/4th of the Spear of Adun in full color. I might draw a proper version of the whole thing at a lower level of detail in the future.
As for the alternate campaign units, I'm not sure... It'd be a ton of work even just to recolor them without the ones that would need completely new drawings. It's the same problem as the upgraded Zerg units from HotS, I would rather spend the time adding completely new units. On the other hand, a Tal'Darim version of the chart would be really cool... I will probably do just a couple, like the Sentinal, Aiur Zealot, maybe the wrathwalker, etc.

Thanks! Yes, the Valkyrie in this chart and also on its main page in the book is based on a Blizzard model that didn't make it into the final game. They actually did publicly show a really early version of the design though, inΒ a panel on the development of the SC2 engine Β you can catch a glimpse of it. Here is a screenshot.
