Description
English isn't the only language on earth, and it's not the only language that music, literature, etc. appear in.A little diversity won't kill you, and there's no need to hate something just because it's not your language.

Romance languages are formed from a far more logical way than English. Words come from roots using affixes, while in English they have random origins and no connections. Words in English just don't relate. If you learn Latin and start joining prefixes and suffixes, it becomes a whole new game, far more interesting than random and nonsensical words.
Then there are those cases like "oval" and, obviously, "ovo", which in English is "egg", but without "eggal". And I could go on and on with hundreds of cases where Romance consistency and familiarity of words wins tremendously.
Oval, ovo/egg.
Aquatic, aqua/water.
Accord, concord, corage, cor/heart.
Unique, union, un/one.
Language, linguistic, lingua/tongue.
Terrain, subterranean, terrestrial, terra/land, to atterrate/to land...

I just want sign language to be taught in schools, because to me it makes more sense to be able toΒ communicate withΒ everyone in your own country than with people in countries you may never visit. I do enjoy learning Spanish though.

I can think of some advantages that non-English languages have over English. Non-English first names are usually MUCH prettier than English first names. Many other languages also sound prettier, especially Italian and French.

Often English is the best, because it has a very vaste vocaboulary.
If you listen songs in italian (for example), words seem written in a random way, because italian vocaboulary is quite poor.

While it definitely isn't always the better language, it is the main language used in a very large economy, even though that economy is pretty crumbled right now. So as a way to make the market accessible, people learn English. This doesn't mean language diversity is bad, though, just that there are often reasons why English is used as commonly as it is or, perhaps, why people are clinging onto it too.
At least this is my thoughts on why. I personally think that learning more languages is fantastic, since it removes language barriers between you and a ton of other people, along with your mention on music, literature, shows and et cetera.

We meet again.
Even though English is very powerful, it lacks some modularity and logic. It also lacks purity. But the thing I'll give it is that it can be very expressive and it lacks genders, making it easier.
I like German since it has a tidy writing and word building system and it has many cool words. It is also very pure, so its structure stayed more stable than English did.

AnarchisThinker In reply to Derroflcopter [2012-07-03 13:31:28 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, we do.
And out of curiosity, I just want to know on what you mean when you say English lacks modularity and logic, along with it lacking purity. In part, it's because I don't understand what they mean in the context of this topic. =/
π: 0 β©: 1
Derroflcopter In reply to AnarchisThinker [2012-07-07 20:50:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's less lacking logic and more lacking tidiness/neatness. English, as a human language, acquired it's vocabulary over a long time from many languages and those words aren't always brought in consistantly and the same rules don't always apply. For example, Germanic words can be merged, but Latin words can't, like "windhome" vs. "ventilationhome".
Oddities in English can be hard to see, but they're there.
For example, won't = will not... wait, where the hell did "o" come from?
Many people think it isn't a big deal, but I laugh when a person who claims to be a perfectionist doesn't consider linguistic factors in his/her life.
π: 0 β©: 2
SolaraOkami In reply to Derroflcopter [2018-10-12 05:45:23 +0000 UTC]
The "o" came from the "o" in not ...
π: 0 β©: 0
AnarchisThinker In reply to Derroflcopter [2012-07-08 10:32:48 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining it for me then. And now thinking about it, yeah. Where the hell does that "o" come in?
And for your last paragraph, I sometimes consider myself perfectionist at times, though never truly am 100%. Though for someone to claim to be a perfectionist all the time, you're spot-on when they'd have to consider every single factor, inclusive of linguistics.

As a matter of fact, of all the languages I'm familiar with, English is probably the second most underdeveloped and primitive language I know of, as well as the second youngest. (the first one being Romanian).
It's virtually impossible to work with it because every time you translate something into English from a much more complex language, much of the content is lost. Really, I translate into English for a living and it's a pain, because I sometimes have to rewrite entire sentences, sometimes break them into two or more, for them to make sense in english.
I'm begining to think the only reason it's so wide-spread is because an eight year old can learn it in less than four years just by watching television.

That hardly surprises me seeing how much it changed in the past 1000 something years. There was plenty for recorded history to remember, whereas the history of many other languages was more or less forgotten, by the time they were first written down, and didn't change that much since then. Old and even middle english requires an interpreter to be fully understood, while I can recite the Funeral Sermon from the Pray Codex to a 10 year old, and they would have no trouble understanding it.
