actually he can i think in the second game Lucy says that the reason he couldn't in the first game was because of the glitchy animus. I'm not trying to be a know it all but here

Yeah though I believe it's because Ubisoft got lazy and never gave Altair a swim option either that or Ubisoft didn't know how to get the swimming to work without problem. (You decide)

Plus one thing I noticed is that the Xbox and PS3 AC1 atually make him flailanround a bit before he dies. In the DS Altairs cronicles the second he touches water (no matter how little) he's sudenly sprawled on the floor.....
