Description
This was based off a deleted scene storyboard for Cars 3 that I noticed in the Art of Cars 3 book. Looked like there may have been a flashback of Doc Hudson when he tried to get back into racing after his crash. The storyboard looked so emotional, he was both angry & sad, I had to try and draw it.Almost tempted to call this mixed media, as I used Photoshop a little bit. I use Photoshop on almost all my drawings to do touch-ups and color corrections, but this time I actively used it to add highlights to the tears, as he glassy eyes in the storyboard. (And lemme tell ya, car tears are tough to draw!) So technically, I guess it's 98% pencil, 2% Photoshop. Made a few other changes too. In the storyboard he's facing at the opposite angle, and it's at night, and it's raining. Didnt trust myself to try and do nighttime rain lol

Poor Doc. He was not too happy after his crash.
Many years later, he met Lightning McQueen the famous race car in Radiator Springs, and then he became a crew chief for Lightning McQueen and did a great job!

Yeah it's too bad he had such a sad backstory. But I guess it gave him depth as a character. And I love Lightning & Doc's relationship, I definitely see them as family.

Aww thank you! Glad you think so! Doc Hudson ones take quite a while, especially as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, due to all his detailing.Β

Whoa...this is phenomenal...I'm just at a loss of words for it...the look on Doc's face just kills me...and seeing how is windscreen is glassy as if from crying...I don't know if my heart can handle it!
Honestly the way you draw cars is too amazing for words! I mean it looks like something I would expect to see from a Pixar promotion! Seriously, you have got some talent there! Keep it up!

Β Well thank you so much! I'm glad you felt the emotion I was trying to convey! I knew the tears would make or break this, I had to use a screenshot of teary-eyed Lightning for reference. I'm pleased you like my Cars art so much!Β Β

you just broke my heart....
I'm serious about that, and also about the fact this is an incredibly beautiful piece of art. I cannot believe what a amazing artist you are (you've been my muse since I first saw your art), and that you actually loved my story on FFN. That honestly means the world to me. You are so professional!!!

Β !!!!! Well that's just about one of the nicest compliments I think I've ever gotten I'm so glad this reached you in some way, and made you feel something, that means I succeeded in what I set out to do. I knew this could be heartbreaking if I could pull it off, and I wanted to do it much in the way a writer puts their favorite characters through a lot of trouble (and I've started to go back and re-read your story recently because I enjoy it that much
).

I absolutely, truly mean it!! I mean, I have just admired your art and the genuine emotions behind so many pieces so much and I just keep hoping I'll be nearly as good as you one day when it comes to those amazing black-and-white illustrations. You inspired me to try doing Tex, so, we'll see!
Well, it's a heartbreak, but a good one, if that makes sense. It hits the feels in all the right places. If you can make a person cry (or nearly feel it), I think that's a good accomplishment. It means the feeling you put into the piece is really seen by others.
And really?? Oh my gosh, that means so much to me! I was so scared to post that story, being my first fanfic and all, but people like you and my sister really just gave me the courage to realize it could be good.
(I'm posting another story on there called "Aurora, Remembered," - you may have seen the update - and it's going to tie in with "For the Love of a Racer" in its own ways, if you're ever interested. I'm slow at posting it though because my library blocked FFN.com on mobile devices, soo... )

Well thank you so much! That really makes my day hearing that you've been such a fan of what I've done
Ooo, Tex! I never thought about it, but Tex seems like he would be really fun, and a big headache to draw. His grill would be a detailing nightmare, but so is Doc in a lot of ways. (Seriously sometimes when I draw Doc, I start to question my life choices lol). But it would be fun drawing those horns & his cow print roof Good luck with him if you do it, I'm sure you'll do a great job.
And yes, really! For a first fic, that's some awesome writing skill you got there! There were some days that seeing those notifications in my email that you had updated made my day. I did see you had started another fic. I'm living in a bit of an Olympic bubble at the moment, but once they're done I'll check it out.
