Description
When I was a kid, my folks moved from the Oakland section of Pittsburgh out to Harmar Township in the Allegheny Valley. They didn't know it at the time but they had just created a Rail Fan. The Pennsylvania Railroad's Conemaugh Division ran through Harmarville, it serviced Harmar Coal Mine and other local businesses like Red Raven Pop, they even had their own station! The twin tracks were always busy, much to my teachers chagrin at Harmar Elementary School not to mention Fr. Dempsey's Sunday morning surmons at St. Francis church! I loved to watch those big dirty dark green Pennsy locomotives with their bright red & white keystones hauling ass with their Screaming Banshee air horns blaring at every crossing, what a sound as they rumbled by! Then one day all that changed and all the beautiful red keystones got painted over and replaced with Penn Central "PC" logos. I didn't know anything about mergers and bankruptcies, I just knew my keystones were gone and a new railroad was in town with weird green cabin cars and funny hastily painted snake like logos on the locomotives and cars. Almost as suddenly years later, it seemed like all the railroads in the northeast were in trouble or bankrupt and the government stepped in and a new railroad was formed called Conrail (Consolidated Rail Corporation). Suddenly I was seeing all different locomotives from all the fallen northeast roads with again hastily painted CR's and then came the electric Locomotives and cabin cars (caboose). I didn't know what to make of all this, but the new Conrail blue locomotives started to grow on me and there was still all the fallen flags still rolling around the system to add some variety. I never really liked the Conrail logo till I heard that the crews called it the "Surf's Up" logo and suddenly that was OK too. These guys running Conrail turned a mess into a first class railroad!Today the Blue cabin cars are gone and Conrail has been divided up between CSX and Norfolk Southern, but that's another story. For a while we'll still get to see Conrail Quality Blue, but slowly but surely it's giving way to boring black & white and CSX blue and gold. For me now it's always a thrill to see one of those pretty blue Geeps or GE's on NS or CSX freight train and I think to myself, enjoy it now and take pictures because soon it will all be gone.

The one thing I do get a kick out of, speaking of CSX's Blue and Yellow, is the name of the current livery... Dark Future. *Shakes head* "Boy that's a motivator..."
You ever read the Trains Mag. railroad reading article, 'When Indy Bleed Blue'? The stuff you wrote somewhat reminds me of that article.

No reason for optimism there. Most of the train photos I shoot are of CSX on the old P&LE, I love the variety and inconsistency of CSX paint schemes, I especially like the very faded old Geeps and Dash 8s that seem just run forever.
I haven't picked up a Trains magazine in years, but I remember it being a quality magazine, so that's quite a compliment, thanks!

My grandpa still gets them, but on the flip side he doesn't have the internet... But on the flip of that, my birthday present is a subscription to 'Model Railroader', the high light of the month, along with updates to 'Death By Health And Safety'...

I should pick a copy up sometime just to keep abreast of what's new out there on the rails. I take a lot of train photos, I don't post many, but I take some almost every day. I always like Model Railroader magazine.

The one that just came out is the 75th, I think, brilliant map of the mergers in the US and Canada.

Niiiiiice. That giant fustercluck in the northeast resulted in what could arguably be the most popular railroad behind the CB&Q.

I like the SD-40, and the updated lantern seems to fit with the history of Conrail a bit more than it would for the rest of the lines you've done a pinup for. Good time to use it. This is definitely a different visual style then your other ones, and I like it. The story's great, too. That's more than I ever knew about the lines in the northeast combined! Last thing I need is to develop a passion for trains as much as I have for certain other machines.

Thanks! Yeah, I figured the WD-40 would fit the era. When I was a kid in Harmarville, the trains that barreled ass through town left an impression on me. They would literally put a stop to anything that was going on. Teachers had to stop teaching, preachers and priests had to stop preaching, now that's power you have to respect! As a kid, you had to love it! I still have to laugh about it, there you would be sitting in class or in church bored to death and you'd hear those air horns and then the rumble and the screech of steel on steel. Father Dempsey was cool, he would calmly continue mass, even though we couldn't hear him, he was on a schedule and had other masses, but some of the stupid teachers would try to talk above the noise, but the trains put them in there place in short order. I love trains!

I think it really attests to the power of trains as freight-hauling and cultural forces that they're still a main method of getting things from place to place. I've never lived near enough to the tracks to have what you've described happen on a regular basis, but I belive you!

I'm sure. That's cool. All this train stuff reminded me of all the cast brass belt buckles I got a little while ago from a guy who had worked on the railroad for over 30 years... From this [link] there's a link to each one.

Thanks. You've already done pinups for railroads I didn't even know existed, which was cool, but it'll be nice to see a UP one. Finally a railroad I knew about beforehand....and maybe a Santa Fe and a Rio Grade at some point.

Cool!! Awesome job as always. There was a yard near my grandmothers house that Dad would take me to. We'd watch the Conrail and NS locos do their job. Now that she's in a assisted living facility, we had to sell her house. I hope to go there again, this time with my camera.

Wonderful. It's cool that you have almost every component's logo up there. I remember seeing Conrail locos, even after the breakup, they were still seen in places, I've even seen some Conrail locos attached to CN (through trains from CSX no doubt). Apparently "Conrail" still lives in several jointly owned areas, half owned by the Horse, half by....Chessie, Seaboard and Xverything else.
So, it's called the Surf's Up? I only ever heard the insulting name, "Conrail Snail"
One last thing, I like the updated implements that this pin-up girl is holding.
