Description Each year, the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators does a major show. The theme for the the show this year is Pittsburgh Recast. The show will be at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District in November.

My idea for the show was to do an illustration showing the evolution of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pittsburgh with Penn Station as the center and constant factor of the evolution. A classic story of no matter how much things change, they remain the same.

Featured in this illustration starting from the left are two classic Pennsylvania Rairoad Atlantic locomotives, a PRR streamlined K4 Pacific, a PRR T1 Duplex, a Penn Central General Motors diesel, a Conrail General Motors Geep and finally a Norfolk Southern General Electric Dash 9. These are flanked by steel mills and the modern City of Pittsburgh skyline featuring the USX Tower, PPG Place and the Highmark Building.

I'm aware of this deviation being more than a decade old bUT I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WE HAD A SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS.Β
And what I admire is that DA is teaching me more of our town's history than my school.
I ought to do research on the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators.

Oh my god, this is AMAZING!! Conrail and the PRR has always been my favorite, as is Pennsylvania!

Let me ask, are the numbers on the number plaques/plates/numberboards the years they went out? Or the years they were seen? Cause Conrail in the regular scheme was most common ib the 80's, then Conrail Quality in the 90's.

Yknow. If you redraw tbis, why not add an SD80MAC inbetween the CR SD40 and the NS -9?

And finally,

we don't have any PRR T1s due to those cock eating scrappers. Boy if i met an old bag who scrapped an engine I'd beat him up.

Pennsy only made it as far west as St. Louis. Other railroads carried through cars to the west coast via KC.

yankeedog In reply to HerrDrayer [2010-03-30 02:51:11 +0000 UTC]

I was surprised that the Pennsy didn't go that far. Union Station in KC is beautiful. The one night we were there, a big band was practicing above a restaurant/diner over on the right side, it was so cool, the place was empty, the lights were low and the sounds of Glenn Miller music were echoing through the station, it was ghostly, I'll never forget that.

Great town KC is. I want to get back out and see the Liberty Memorial again now that they have it finished. The new part was still under construction when we were there and only the store was open, it was still cool, the old part is amazing. The KC Air Expo is a great airshow, we had a good time. What's the big shopping district with all the fountains called? That was really cool too, my wife and daughter did a lot of shopping while we were there. My son took a lot of photos in KC: [link]

I hope that happens. There are certain aspects of Kansas City that I truly miss, but that list does NOT include the politics or the public transportation.

Yeah, I could do without the politicians here in Pittsburgh as well as their dumbass decisions on public transportation.

They tested Colorado Railcars here for the Northeast suburbs and were all gung ho about it and then nothing. I have a feeling the bus brained idiots at the Allegheny County Port Authority and the union shot it down, it didn't fit into their buses only mentality.

The citizens of Kansas City voted for a tram to connect the southern suburbs, downtown, and the airport, but the political establishment managed to kill it despite the voter mandate. There must be a lot of oil money and road contractor money lining political coffers.
