Description
Each year, the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators does a major show. The theme for the the show this year is Pittsburgh Recast. The show will be at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District in November. My idea for the show was to do an illustration showing the evolution of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pittsburgh with Penn Station as the center and constant factor of the evolution. A classic story of no matter how much things change, they remain the same.
Featured in this illustration starting from the left are two classic Pennsylvania Rairoad Atlantic locomotives, a PRR streamlined K4 Pacific, a PRR T1 Duplex, a Penn Central General Motors diesel, a Conrail General Motors Geep and finally a Norfolk Southern General Electric Dash 9. These are flanked by steel mills and the modern City of Pittsburgh skyline featuring the USX Tower, PPG Place and the Highmark Building.
Adobe Illustrator 8.0, Apple G4 & G5 Power Mac, OS 9.2

I can't believe the work here, it's huge and magnificent, and the historic mentions (as always) are making of all the details a whole.
Don, you know so much about your town, you're doing such great illustrations that are wonderful tributes to Pittsburgh (and railways too I would say) one day you'll have to draw your own statue towering on this building

Mr. Henderson, this is very industrial, but touches my heart.
Over the time, I have been observing closely, how you plan and work on your illustrations.
I can appreciate that you have worked to such an extent by now that you can use various works of yours as a library or clip art, this is specially good, we can see all new construction, using the same old bricks!
I can remember the war times blast furnace factory from Arsenal of Democracy! in contrast the peaceful daytime city skyline at right looks great! the day and night transition surely tells about the time shift!
This peace tells many things, the dedication, effort and patience of the people behind all the work, it tells the same about you.
Beautiful work!

Thanks Ahmed! I was wondering if anyone would notice that some of the elements were from previous illustrations. This is almost a timeline of my illustrations as well. The beauty of Adobe Illustrator allows the art to be almost clip art like in that I can utilize old and new work to blend them into something new. I had this idea in my mind for a long time, but it took the theme for this show to pull it all together. I was really pleased that I was also able to use photo reference that I took myself of Penn Station, the Doughboy Statue, the Conrail Geep and the Norfolk Southern Dash 9 locomotive.

Thanks! I had been wanting to do something like this for awhile, so when PSi picked the Pittsburgh Recast theme for the show, it was just a matter of figuring out how to pull it off. Here's a link about the show: [link]

Thanks! Doing one element at a time simplifies the process and the ability to isolate layers makes a illustration like this manageable. Once I had a sketch worked up for what I wanted to do, it was just a matter of doing the elements and getting them all to work.

Super! I went to The Heinz center 2 years ago. It was an interesting museum. I liked the old Trolly car.
My uncle used to drive the trollys and the buses in Pittsburgh. Oh the stories he can tell.

Thanks! Yeah, I went a bit over the top with this one, but considering the venue for the show I wanted to do my best work, so time wasn't an issue, but I have been working on this for several months, it's still not done, but it's close.
