Description
Each year, the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators does a major show. The theme for the the show this year is Pittsburgh Recast. The show will be at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District in November. My idea for the show was to do an illustration showing the evolution of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pittsburgh with Penn Station as the center and constant factor of the evolution. A classic story of no matter how much things change, they remain the same.
Featured in this illustration starting from the left are two classic Pennsylvania Rairoad Atlantic locomotives, a PRR streamlined K4 Pacific, a PRR T1 Duplex, a Penn Central General Motors diesel, a Conrail General Motors Geep and finally a Norfolk Southern General Electric Dash 9. These are flanked by steel mills and the modern City of Pittsburgh skyline featuring the USX Tower, PPG Place and the Highmark Building.

No doubt about that, it's criminal. Pittsburgh had a vibrant trolley system and they tore almost all of it up. Now our streets are clogged with buses.

Nobody really seemed to consider that Americans wouldn't stop with buying one car per family. With 2+ cars per family the minimum now, there's definitely more traffic competing for street space. When the transition was first made though, it must have been seen as a great improvement with smooth, consistent asphalt from curb to curb, no ugly overhead wiring, and more space available without the tracks taking up the best real estate. I've seen some pictures of Kansas City streets before and after the bus conversion, and with traffic at 1950's levels, the streets really did look a lot cleaner and friendlier without the trams. The unfortunate consequence is that it's far more expensive to convert back to trams, although in many cities, the tracks are still there...under 3 inches of asphalt.

I think what Pittsburgh should have done was to scale the system down to a series of loops and kept the Streetcar system. Some of the system is now part of the light rail system called the "T". They built a busway that would have been the perfect location for light rail, but we lost part of Pittsburgh's soul when they did away with the Streetcar system.

It's Ironic if you think about it.
It went from two companies (PRR & NYC) To one company (PC), which failed and became (CR) Only to be split back into two companies (NS & CSX)

It is ironic that when NS and CSX divided up CR, the equipment that went to NS was stenciled PRR and the equipment that went to CSX was stenciled NYC. I personally think that both railroads need to incorporate into their names or logos something from the 2 railroads. Here's an example: [link]

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that, They noted it in the Aug 1998 Trains Magazine.
They had a photo of a Conrail boxcar with NYC markings on the side. "Old Initials See New Use" was the name of the caption. (It was in the Railroad News Photos.)
Keep up the good work.

I even saw the old PRR logo type with out the Keystone on some locomotives.
I just saw a bunch of CR hoppers stenciled NYC the other day on the old P&LE mainline in Pittsburgh.

This is amazing! I believe you should consider enabling buying this as a print... it would make an incredible wall poster!

Thanks! I should do that. I did this several years ago for the Pittsburgh Recast show and sold the original framed 30x40 GiclΓ©e print to a collector. Part of the deal was that I wasn't to reproduce the image at the same size or by the same method, but I could sell other sizes and types of prints. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hmmmm....it'd be nice if you could do something similar to this for maybe KC and Union Pacific (or Omaha maybe?), or something like Topeka and ATSF.
I could help with history and some shots of downtown areas since it's in my territory...

That's a good idea! If you want to put some reference together, I'm game. The mural in KC's Union Station is pretty cool, have you ever seen it?

I tell you what. I was there this weekend, but wasn't able to get downtown shots. However, I'm supposed to be going out that way in early October, so I'll definitely get some day and night shots of Union Station and some other downtown landmarks around the Power and Light District. And then it's just a matter of getting some ATSF traction in there.

Cool, I'll have to dig through my photos from KC too, I may have some useful shots of Union Station. I should really post some of the photos I took out there, it's such a great town, very photogenic! Here's some shots my son took when we were out there: [link]
Hey, could you get some photos of the Night & Day statues from NYC's Pennsylvania Station in KC? I'll get you details of it's location if you don't know where it's at.

Thank you! I just had a 36x24 GiclΓ©e print done of it for a show at the John Heinz History Center this fall.
Yeah, I like the steamers too, but I would have liked to have gotten a PRR diesel like a Baldwin Shark in the mix, but there just wasn't room.
