Awesome stuff! I just went to Pearl Harbor a few weeks ago to see the Arizona memorial, and I'll be heading to DC in about 16 days to see the WWII memorial there as part of a special assignment with my newspaper. This just ties in with all that I guess.

Great stuff.

Thanks! I've been using Illustrator for about 10 years or more. I'm not a big fan of CS, I much prefer the speed of AI8, but I like some of the CS tools like transparancy.

I have some friends that were over there during the same time period with the 13th Bomb Squadron. It seems like it's the little things that get to me. I'll hear a song that she used to sing when I was a kid or my dad or sister will mention something and I'm a mess again, but I'm getting better. That had to be rough losing both parents in that short of time, how do you recover from that?

Thanks Ron. I had a trip home from South Carolina a few years back that was like that. It was about this time of year, the wind had picked up so much dust from freshly plowed fields along I-95, you couldn't see the car in front of you and then when we got up to MD and PA on I-70 it was blizzard conditions. I swore I'd never go south again in the winter, it nice down there, but it's nasty up here.

No what you mean there. I have some pics going across the chest bay and you can see how bad the wind was. I have to get them out of the wifes camers, she has over two hunderd pictures in it so have to sort through them to find it. will put them up as soon as I can.

No way. My dad was a Boatswain's Mate aboard a Destroyer during the invasion of Sicily, Anzio and you guessed it...Southern France. He was on a DD (Destroyer Division) though instead of a DE (Destroyer Escort). DD612 to be exact. The USS Kendrick. They were torpedoed while patrolling the Med in Sept, '43 by a Nazi Heinkle He-111. Amazingly the Kendrick didn't sink and they shot down the He-111 after it passed over the ship.

Cool, that's a great story! The USS Currier was DE 700, I did these two pieces of art as a tribute to my uncle Tommy and the Currier [link] [link]
USS Currier DE-700 [link] )
USS Kendrick DD-612 [link] ) and [link]

Now here's another twist for for you, Kendrick and Henderson are a variants of the Scottish name Mac Eanruig (Mc Henry) or son of Henry!

It just keeps getting more and more ironic doesn't it? I read that history about the Kendrick several years ago and asked my dad about it. It's funny how stories end up being diluted or vice-versa. Dad had always told me that one of the crewmen was killed when the torpedo struck the ship. There's no record of it in this particular article. I also asked him if they, in fact, threw life rings to the He-111 crew after it crashed into the sea. His words were "Do you really think we would try and save those who just tried to sink us?" LOL! NO! Needless to say...the Kendrick made no attempt to save the enemy aircrew. Heck of a deal huh. Mom and Dad both passed in 2005 and I'm glad I cared enough to ask and listen about those experiences when he was still alive. We are fortunate people Don. In more ways than one.

It sure is interesting. It's a small world. Here's another twist, when my dad was coming home from the Korean War, the troop ship he was on, the General Black collided with a Nationalist Chinese LST [link]

You should try to document in some way what you and your dad talked about so that when you are gone, it's not lost to your children. I'd have let the nazi bastards drown too.

I'm sorry to hear that both your folks passed away, that had to be very difficult to lose them both in the same year. God bless them.

Yes, we are fortunate.

Crazy (about the Chinese LST)! Yes, I've pretty much already documented everything I know. I'm sure more will probably be discovered so that will be included as well.
Thanks. Yes, mom and dad passed seven months apart but I know where they are now and everything is ok. I have great memories of them both. They were the best parents I could have hoped for.

yankeedog In reply to Lyle462 [2008-02-22 22:05:53 +0000 UTC]

The Chinese LST was probably US WWII surplus. I don't know what happened to the LST, but one Merchant Marine was killed on the General Black.

You have a healthy attitude, I only hope that mine can be as good, I'm trying.

Too bad about the sailor being killed. There's too many stories like that sorry to say. About my attitude... I can't really take credit for that. Yet another blessing of faith ya' know.

yankeedog In reply to Lyle462 [2008-02-23 12:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was too bad, here they were taking soldiers home who survived the war and one of them gets killed. Merchant Marines are unsung heroes.

I've tried to rationalize all that my mom went through and all that we experienced with her. It brought us closer as a family, but it has challenged my faith. I was saying to my dad last night, it all seems so unfinished, it seems like their should have been more to the story.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Station Square, I love it there, such a great old station. I was parked over there yesterday. Did you get to see any trains? I saw a couple BNSF locomotives on the head end of a NS train yesterday morning, but I couldn't get a shot of it.

Oh yes! I saw them too! I walking moving through the parking lot next to the Tracks in the nearly frozen air hurrying to the Grand Concourse at 8:30 AM, and they rumbled past. I'd've loved to slow to look at them but my mom was cold. xD But other then those I heard them, every once in awhile during the PSSAs the floor would shake lightly and that deep rumble would echo through the building.

It was magnificent.
