Description A comment by ~steamby51 got me thinking, what if? Traditionally on the Pennsylvania Railroad, passenger locomotives got the red and gold Keystone number plate and lowly freight locomotives got the basic black and gold round number plate, now there were exceptions, like the 4-8-2 M1 Mountain type and a few other that could switch hit, but the I1 Decapod or "Hippo" was a pure freight engine, it was all business and that business was hauling heavy freight trains over the Allegheny Mountains, but when a heavy passenger train needed a push, you could always count on a I1 to get that job done too.
After WWII, the Pennsy went on a campaign to revamp the steam fleet with what they called the "Beauty Treatment". The "Beauty Treatment" for most Pennsy locomotives consisted of a new cast steel drop coupler pilot, higher-mounted headlight, and turbo-generator mounted on the smokebox front for easier access. Most of the I1's got some of the "Beauty Treatment", but no Keystones or sheet-steel drop coupler pilots. That is until now!

You can dress a beast up but she's still a beast. I like your treatment of the I1.

Nice locomotive. A great symbol of the "Standard Railroad of the World"

Thanks! It's funny you should mention the Standard. I remember seeing a photo one time of an I1 near the end of the steam era in the late 50's and scrawled on the side of the one cylinder was "Junk the Standard". No doubt the ranting of a disgruntled employee who had had enough with the dirty rough riding I1's. I'm sure after eyeing up those new diesels, the Standard was doomed, it's too bad back then that they didn't realize the mess they were getting us into with those fancy diesels. Now we are dependent of foreign oil when we had all that domestic coal. I miss the Standard.
