Description
The Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia Pennsylvania made a name for itself building some of the finest steam locomotives in the world, but before WWII, Baldwin began to develop diesel electric locomotives. Building both freight and passenger locomotives, they turned to industrial designer Raymond Loewy to design the Shark! With lines reminiscent of his PRR T1 Steam locomotive, Baldwin had a winner on it's hands. The Pennsylvania Railroad bought large numbers of these rugged but complicated locomotive in both passenger and freight versions. Baldwin also supplied Sharks to the rival New York Central as well as the Baltimore & Ohio and the Delaware & Hudson, but in the end Baldwin just couldn't compete with General Motors EMD. Baldwin ceased production in 1956. The Sharks lasted on the Pennsy into the 1960's. From 1830 to 1956 Baldwin built over 70,000 locomotives.Adobe illustrator 8, Apple G4 Power Mac, OS 9.2

Actually, I think it's modeled after a Baldwin Shark, but the Pennsy as well as other railroads used them. I read recently that some guy in Michigan has several old D&H Baldwin Sharks stashed away in some buildings. Maybe one of these days they will get restored and we'll get to see them running again!

I'd never even heard of these, much less viewed one. I knew Baldwin got into the freight side of things, but never into the passenger areas.

Baldwin was big into passenger locomotives for a while, especially with the PRR and NYC. The Pennsy Sharks were in different configuration, some passenger and some freight, then later they were all converted to freight, but in the end they just couldn't compete with EMD. Here's a cool link: [link] Check out the D&H one that were on the Monongahela Rialway.

Thanks! I don't often do any of the Tuscan Red paint schemes that the Pennsy used, but I'm going to do a few more for some ballance. They even painted a K4 Pacific Tuscan Red!

Thanks! I have had subscriptions in the past and I should get one again, but with DA not working too well with OS 9.2, it's kind of a waste of money.

nice work as usual... the closest I ever got to a Shark was the dead line... [link] ... sad... but the lines were unmistakable and elegant

Thanks Chris! It's too bad that some of these elegant locomotives weren't preserved.

Yes, I heard about these Sharks and I've seen photos of them when they were on the the Monongahela Railway here in Pittsburgh. I should do an illustration of one in Monongahela livery.

That's a nice head-on view of the Baldwin classic. The brown and yellow colors in the rest of the image complinet the locomotive color very nicely. Looks real sharp.

Thanks! The Baldwin Shark was always one of my favorites, it had such classic line. As far as the colors with the brown and yellow, it was kind of an accident due to a new monitor I have at home that I haven't figured out how to calibrate. When I opened it here at work, I kind of liked it, the GP30 was done on the same monitor. I love happy accidents.
